Who is Nezuko Kamado?
Tanjiro's younger sister, the only other survivor of the attack on their home, transformed into a demon in the process. Unusually, she refuses to eat humans, sleeping for long stretches to recover her strength instead. Carried in a wooden box on her brother's back, she fights beside him with ferocious kicks, her lingering love for her family holding her hunger at bay.
Appearance
Long black hair that lightens to a warm orange at the tips, tied back with a ribbon, framing a face that keeps its human softness. Her eyes are pink with narrowed, slit-like pupils, her nails are long and tinted dark pink, and small fangs show when her mouth opens. A length of split bamboo is bound across her jaws as a muzzle. She wears a pink kimono patterned with hemp leaves, a wide orange obi and mismatched footwear. Her body can shrink to fit inside her brother's wooden box or swell back to full size in moments.
Personality
Barely able to speak, Nezuko expresses herself through growls, hums, gestures and startlingly expressive eyes. Her human affection survived her transformation intact: she is protective of children, fiercely defensive of her brother, and visibly distressed by cruelty. Against demons she becomes something else entirely, a snarling, kicking predator who fights with abandon. She is also oddly playful, patting people on the head, headbutting them in reassurance, and sulking when scolded. The instinct to devour humans still rises in her, and the memory of her mother's voice is what pushes it back down. Observers who expect a monster are repeatedly disarmed by how plainly she behaves like a loving sister.
Background
The second eldest of the Kamado children, she grew up in a mountain house above the treeline, helping her mother with the younger siblings and the household while her brother sold charcoal in town. She was known locally as a beauty and had a stubborn, caring streak with the little ones. One winter night a demon entered the house while Tanjiro was away; the family was slaughtered and Nezuko alone survived, the demon's blood having entered her wounds and remade her. She woke confused and violent, attacked her brother, and then stopped, resisting the urge to feed on him. That refusal persuaded a passing Hashira to let her live.
Role in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Unwavering Resolve (opening episodes)
Found bleeding in the ruins of her home, she turns on Tanjiro and then forces herself back from the brink, standing between him and a swordsman's blade. Her choice buys the siblings their lives. She is muzzled with bamboo and placed in a wooden box so that she can travel with her brother, shielded from sunlight.
Final Selection and early missions
Left in Urokodaki's care during Tanjiro's two years of training and his trial on the wisteria mountain, she sleeps for the entire period, sustaining herself on rest instead of human flesh. When she wakes she recognises her brother at once, and the Corps grudgingly allows her to accompany him.
Asakusa and the Tsuzumi Mansion
In Asakusa she fights off a newly made demon in the street, revealing her strength in combat. The demon physician Tamayo plants a hypnotic suggestion in her mind that recasts all humans as family, strengthening her restraint. At the drum demon's mansion she defends an injured boy while her brother fights elsewhere.
Mount Natagumo
Pulled into the spider demons' web-strewn mountain, she is seized and dangled as bait but tears free, and her kicks shatter a demon's skull. She is left critically weakened, and the sight of her brother's injuries at the battle's end drives her to cover him with her own body as dawn approaches.
Rehabilitation Training and the Hashira trial
Her existence forces a confrontation at Corps headquarters, where several Hashira demand her execution and one stabs her to test her nature. She endures sunlight exposure and the temptation of human blood without attacking, and the Corps master formally sanctions her presence alongside her brother.
Abilities and techniques
Demon physiology and regeneration
Her wounds close rapidly and severed limbs regrow, letting her shrug off injuries that would kill a human. Like all demons she is undone only by sunlight or a Nichirin blade, and she is driven back by wisteria.
Superhuman strength
She fights barefoot and barehanded, favouring kicks powerful enough to crush a demon's head or launch a grown man across a room. Her blows carry force far out of proportion to her slight frame.
Size and body alteration
She can compress her body to fit inside a small wooden box and expand back to full height almost instantly, and can slim or lengthen limbs to slip free of bindings and webbing.
Sleep in place of feeding
Rather than consuming humans, she restores her energy through long periods of sleep, once resting for two years without waking. This makes her unique among demons and is central to the Corps' willingness to tolerate her.
Hypnotic restraint
Suggestion implanted by Tamayo reframes every human as a member of her family, reinforcing her natural reluctance to attack people. It does not remove her hunger but gives her a reliable barrier against it.
Bamboo muzzle
Not a power but a tool: the split bamboo bound across her jaws prevents her from biting anyone in a moment of weakness and has become her most recognisable feature.
Relationships
- Tanjiro Kamado
- Older brother
- The anchor of her remaining humanity. She recognises him through confusion and bloodlust, fights to protect him, and travels on his back in a box; his pursuit of a cure exists entirely for her sake.
- Tamayo
- Benefactor
- A demon doctor who studies Nezuko's unusual body, strengthens her resistance to hunger with hypnotic suggestion, and offers the first real hope that her transformation might one day be reversed.
- Zenitsu Agatsuma
- Admirer and ally
- He is loudly, hopelessly devoted to her from the moment he sees her, which she mostly ignores. Even so, she accepts him as one of her brother's companions and defends him when it matters.
- Sakonji Urokodaki
- Guardian
- The retired Hashira who watched over her sleeping body for two years on Mount Sagiri and later staked his own honour on her harmlessness before the Hashira who wanted her destroyed.
Notable moments
- She stops herself from biting her brother and shields him from a swordsman's blade in the snow.
- She sleeps for two years without feeding while her brother trains on Mount Sagiri.
- She destroys a demon with a single kick in the streets of Asakusa.
- She tears free of a spider demon's web after being used as bait on Mount Natagumo.
- She endures a Hashira's test and the open sun without attacking anyone, winning the Corps master's sanction.
Trivia
- She keeps her hair ribbon from her human life, and her kimono carries a hemp leaf pattern traditionally thought to ward off harm.
- She communicates almost entirely in hums and growls because of the bamboo muzzle.
- Her body shrinks small enough to be carried on her brother's back in a wooden box built by a swordsman.
- Wisteria repels her as it does other demons, which is why Corps safe houses are planted with it.
- She is the only demon permitted to travel with the Demon Slayer Corps.
