Who is Son Gohan?

Goku's elder son, a gentle, bookish boy pushed into battle long before he wants it. Kidnapped and trained by Piccolo, he grows into one of the most powerful warriors on Earth, though his strength surfaces mainly in bursts of fury when loved ones are threatened. His arc peaks during the Cell Games, where he must step out of his father's shadow and accept the role of Earth's protector.

Appearance

Gohan inherits his father's spiky black hair and dark eyes, though his features are softer and his expression more thoughtful. Early on he wears a scholarly cap with a dragon ball and a small sword, later Piccolo's weighted purple gi with shoulder pads and cape. During the Cell era he mirrors Goku's orange gi, his hair cropped short after training. After the time skip he favours school uniforms and glasses, plus the Great Saiyaman's green jacket, white cape, helmet and sunglasses. In Super Saiyan states his hair spikes golden and his eyes turn teal; his later mystic form keeps black hair with a bright aura.

Personality

Gentle, bookish and conflict-averse, Gohan is the least warlike of the Saiyan-blooded fighters, happier with textbooks and wildlife than with sparring. He is sensitive to the suffering of others and frequently tries to spare opponents, a kindness his enemies mistake for weakness. Beneath that mildness lies a volcanic temper: when someone he loves is hurt, his power erupts far beyond what his training alone should allow. He is deeply dutiful, torn between his mother's expectations of academic success and the responsibility he feels to protect the planet. Overconfidence is his recurring flaw, as he toys with beaten foes rather than finishing them. In later life he grows awkward, earnest and a little goofy, embracing the role of hero as a secret identity.

Background

Gohan is the first son of Son Goku and Chi-Chi, named after the adoptive grandfather who raised Goku. Born in peacetime, he was brought up in the mountains far from civilisation and steered by his mother toward scholarship rather than martial arts, so he entered the story with no training and no idea that his father's people were a conquering warrior race. His hidden potential was glimpsed only in bursts of panic-driven power. His existence became a flashpoint when Goku's brother Raditz arrived on Earth, recognised the boy's latent strength, and abducted him to force Goku's cooperation, dragging a sheltered child into a war between worlds.

Role in Dragon Ball Z

  1. Saiyan Saga

Kidnapped by his uncle Raditz, Gohan shatters the Saiyan's armour in a rage, revealing enormous buried power. Piccolo then takes him into the wilderness for brutal survival training before the arrival of Nappa and Vegeta. In the battle that follows he loses mentors and friends, watches Piccolo die shielding him, and helps hold the line until Goku arrives.

  2. Namek and Frieza Saga

Gohan travels to Namek with Krillin and Bulma to gather the Dragon Balls and restore his fallen friends. He defies Frieza's forces repeatedly, saves the Namekian child Dende, and fights alongside Krillin and Vegeta against the Ginyu Force. His fury at Frieza's cruelty produces surges of power that briefly stagger the tyrant before Goku takes over.

  3. Android and Cell Saga

Older and stronger, Gohan trains with his father in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and becomes a Super Saiyan. Goku stakes humanity's survival on him at the Cell Games, believing the boy's hidden reserves exceed his own. Pushed past breaking by Cell's atrocities, Gohan ascends to a new level, though his hesitation to finish the fight costs him dearly.

  4. Majin Buu Saga

After the time skip Gohan has largely set fighting aside for school in Satan City, adopting the Great Saiyaman persona and meeting Videl. The Tournament is interrupted by Babidi's scheme, and Buu's rampage leaves Gohan outmatched until the Elder Kai unlocks his full potential, turning him into the strongest fighter on the field for a time.

Abilities and techniques

Hidden Potential

Gohan's defining trait is a vast reservoir of latent power that surfaces under emotional stress. Repeated awakenings let him match opponents far above his training level, and a ritual by the Elder Kai eventually draws that potential out permanently.

Super Saiyan transformations

Achieved during training with his father, the golden-haired state multiplies his strength and speed. He later pushes into a further ascended form during the Cell Games, radiating crackling energy and a level of power that stuns every onlooker.

Masenko

A two-handed energy beam fired from above the forehead, taught to him by Piccolo. It serves as Gohan's signature attack through his early battles and remains a reliable finisher even as stronger techniques enter his arsenal.

Kamehameha

Inherited from his father's lineage of technique, Gohan's cupped-hands energy wave becomes devastating when charged with emotion. His one-armed version against Cell is the most famous use of the attack in the series.

Flight and ki control

Gohan masters energy sensing, flight and ki suppression early, allowing him to track opponents across continents, conceal himself from scouters and sensors, and form barriers or blasts on instinct during combat.

Great Ape transformation

Before his tail is removed, exposure to a full moon or an artificial moonlight sphere turns Gohan into a colossal, uncontrollable ape with enormous destructive force, a Saiyan trait that endangers allies as much as enemies.

Relationships

Son Goku
Father
Gohan idolises his father but spends much of the series separated from him by death or training. Goku's decision to make his son Earth's champion against Cell defines their bond and burdens Gohan with expectation.
Piccolo
Mentor and surrogate father
Once Goku's enemy, Piccolo trains Gohan in the wilderness and is transformed by the boy's kindness. His sacrifice to shield Gohan from Nappa cements one of the series' most important friendships.
Chi-Chi
Mother
Fiercely protective and determined that her son become a scholar, Chi-Chi resists his involvement in every crisis. Her insistence shapes Gohan's double life as both student and fighter.
Videl
Classmate and later partner
The daughter of Mr. Satan uncovers Gohan's secret identity and pressures him into teaching her to fly. Their rivalry softens into mutual trust during the Buu crisis.
Son Goten
Younger brother
Born after the Cell Games, Goten idolises Gohan, who takes on a teaching and guardian role in Goku's absence, training the boy and worrying over his recklessness.

Notable moments

  • His first explosive outburst against Raditz, which reveals that a sheltered child outstrips every veteran fighter present in raw potential.
  • Surviving alone in the wilderness under Piccolo's training, including a night spent as a rampaging Great Ape.
  • Protecting Dende on Namek and standing against Frieza's forces when far stronger allies have already fallen.
  • Ascending beyond Super Saiyan at the Cell Games and ending the fight with a one-armed energy wave.
  • Debuting as the Great Saiyaman in Satan City and being forced to reveal his skills at the World Martial Arts Tournament.

Trivia

  • His name is a pun on a Japanese word for cooked rice, continuing the food-based naming of Goku's family.
  • He is voiced in Japanese by Masako Nozawa, who also performs his father and younger brother.
  • Piccolo, originally one of Goku's deadliest enemies, becomes the closest thing Gohan has to a second parent.
  • The Great Saiyaman costume and poses were designed in-story by Bulma to protect his identity at school.
  • Unlike most Saiyan-blooded characters, Gohan pursues academic study as his true ambition rather than combat.
