Who is Yuji Itadori?
A high schooler with absurd physical strength and an ordinary temperament, who joins the occult research club because it finishes early. After swallowing one of Sukuna's fingers to save his friends, he becomes the king of curses' vessel and is enrolled at Jujutsu High under a death sentence he accepts. He wants everyone to die properly, and keeps discovering how rarely that is possible.
Appearance
Compact and heavily built for a first-year, with pink hair cropped short and a habitual slouch that disappears the moment he starts moving. He wears the school's dark uniform with the hood up and the jacket open. When Sukuna surfaces, black markings spread across his face and a second mouth opens on his cheek, which is the only outward sign that the body is not currently his.
Personality
Unusually ordinary for a shonen lead: friendly, physically fearless, and easily embarrassed. He treats kindness as a default rather than a decision, which is why the series keeps testing it. Underneath is a boy who decided early that a good death means dying surrounded by people, and who is quietly terrified of failing the ones he could not reach in time.
Background
Raised by his grandfather, whose dying instruction was to help people and die surrounded by them. He joined the occult research club for the short hours and won track meets he never entered. When his club-mates opened a cursed object, he swallowed Sukuna's finger to buy them time, expecting to die and finding instead that he had become the most dangerous person in the room.
Role in Jujutsu Kaisen
Fearsome Womb
Becomes Sukuna's vessel, is sentenced to a delayed execution, and is enrolled at Jujutsu High to collect the remaining fingers. A detention centre mission ends with his first real death and Sukuna's binding vow to restore him.
Vs. Mahito
Hidden from the elders and presumed dead, he befriends Junpei and fails to save him from Mahito. Nanami takes him on as a junior and teaches him that the work is a job with standards, not a rescue fantasy.
Kyoto Sister-School Exchange Event
Marked for assassination by the Kyoto elders, he instead finds his closest friend in Todo, and lands his first Black Flash in the fight against Hanami.
Origin of Blind Obedience
Works a mission with no clean resolution and ends the season committed to a war whose terms the institution refuses to state honestly.
Abilities and techniques
Superhuman physique
Without any cursed technique of his own, he outruns club athletes and throws people through walls. His body is durable enough to survive housing Sukuna, which is the reason he was chosen.
Divergent Fist
A delayed second impact of cursed energy that follows the punch, developed because he cannot rely on a technique for damage.
Black Flash
A distortion of space that multiplies output when cursed energy lands within a fraction of a second of the physical blow. Learning to repeat it is his season-long breakthrough.
Host of Ryomen Sukuna
Can be overtaken by the king of curses, who uses the body with devastating skill and no interest in Yuji's survival beyond the terms of their vow.
Relationships
- Megumi Fushiguro
- Classmate
- Megumi argued for his life on the grounds that the world should be unfair in the right direction, which is the debt Yuji spends the series repaying.
- Satoru Gojo
- Teacher
- Gojo treats his death sentence as an administrative delay and trains him accordingly, with affection and no reassurance.
- Kento Nanami
- Mentor
- The adult who talks to him plainly about what the job costs, and who never pretends the work is noble.
- Aoi Todo
- Best friend
- A friendship declared instantly and absurdly by Todo, which turns into genuine partnership mid-fight.
Notable moments
- Swallowing Sukuna's finger in the club room, on the reasoning that someone had to and he was the one who could.
- Dying in the detention centre and being restored by a binding vow he did not negotiate.
- Failing to save Junpei, and the argument with Mahito that follows.
- Landing Black Flash for the first time alongside Todo against Hanami.
Trivia
- His grandfather's last words set the moral standard the entire series measures characters against.
- He is one of very few sorcerers with no inherited technique, which is why his fighting style is almost entirely physical.
