Who is Saitama?

A bored salaryman who trained until he could defeat any foe with a single punch. That overwhelming strength has drained the thrill from fighting, so he hunts for a worthy opponent while chafing at his low hero ranking and the public's refusal to take him seriously. Earnest, deadpan and oddly humble, he treats heroism as a hobby rather than a job.

Appearance

Saitama is a bald man with a plain, rounded face, small dark eyes, and a largely neutral expression. His hero outfit is a bright yellow, close-fitting suit with a short white cape, red gloves, and red boots. A dark belt with a large circular clasp fastens around his waist, while raised shoulder pieces and gloves give the otherwise simple costume a distinctive outline. Away from hero work, he tends to wear ordinary, comfortable clothes. His unremarkable appearance contrasts with the immense power he displays in battle.

Personality

Saitama is laid-back, direct, and often more interested in everyday concerns than in heroic recognition. He can be impatient with long speeches, formalities, and opponents who make a spectacle of themselves. His strength has made most fights feel routine, leaving him frustrated by the absence of a genuine challenge. Despite his casual attitude, he has a strong sense of fairness and will protect people in danger without demanding praise. He does not always understand how others interpret his actions, and he can overlook social cues. His modesty is sincere, though his blunt comments sometimes sound dismissive even when he means no harm.

Background

Before becoming a professional hero, Saitama was an ordinary job seeker who felt dissatisfied with his direction in life. A chance encounter with a monster threatening a child rekindled his childhood wish to become a hero. He began a demanding daily exercise routine and continued it with such consistency that he eventually lost his hair and developed extraordinary strength. By the start of the series, he has spent years defeating threats with ease, but remains obscure and struggles with routine expenses. He joins the Hero Association after Genos encourages him to seek official recognition, although registration does little to change his unassuming habits.

Role in One Punch Man

  1. Opening and early hero work

Saitama establishes the series' central contrast between his overwhelming power and his ordinary outlook. He defeats dangerous monsters with little effort, then returns to errands and household concerns. His meeting with Genos brings him into the Hero Association's orbit, where he takes the entrance tests and begins an official career that gives him a rank but little public acclaim.

  2. House of Evolution

When the House of Evolution targets Saitama, he and Genos investigate its facility and confront its engineered fighters. Saitama's direct approach quickly overwhelms the organization, including its most powerful creation. The incident reinforces how far his strength exceeds the threats that occupy other heroes and adds to Genos's conviction that Saitama is an exceptional mentor.

  3. Meteor arc

Saitama faces a massive meteor threatening City Z after other heroes fail to stop it. His intervention destroys the meteor, but its fragments still damage the surrounding city. The episode draws attention to the difficulty of measuring heroic success by results alone and leaves Saitama frustrated that his effort receives little appreciation from residents.

  4. Deep Sea King arc

Saitama arrives after the Deep Sea King has defeated several heroes and is terrorizing civilians in a shelter. He ends the battle with a single punch. When the crowd criticizes the other heroes and questions the outcome, Saitama deliberately presents himself as an unimpressive opportunist, protecting their reputations at the cost of his own public standing.

  5. Alien invasion arc

During the attack on the Hero Association headquarters, Saitama boards the invading ship and defeats its surviving defenses on the way to the ship's leader, Boros. Their battle gives Saitama a rare opponent who can withstand more than one attack. He ultimately wins, while recognizing that the fight still falls short of the challenge he hoped to find.

Abilities and techniques

Overwhelming strength

Saitama can defeat powerful monsters and opponents with ordinary-looking punches. Even formidable enemies are usually unable to withstand a direct hit. His strength lets him end conflicts rapidly, though it also means that other characters rarely see the full extent of what he can do.

Exceptional speed and reflexes

Saitama moves quickly enough to evade attacks and close distance before opponents can react. His timing lets him interrupt dangerous actions and strike precisely. He often appears relaxed while doing so, making the speed of his movements seem especially startling to observers.

Extreme durability

Saitama withstands impacts and attacks that seriously injure other heroes. He survives the hazards of his battles with little visible harm and can continue fighting without slowing down. His resilience complements his strength, allowing him to meet powerful opponents head-on.

Combat adaptability

Although his fights usually end quickly, Saitama can adjust to unusual opponents and environments. He uses straightforward movement and well-timed strikes rather than elaborate techniques. Against Boros, he varies his approach enough to answer the alien's escalating attacks and bring the fight to a close.

Relationships

Genos
Disciple and housemate
Genos becomes Saitama's disciple after seeing his power and moves into his apartment building. Saitama accepts him with little ceremony, while often responding to Genos's intense admiration with casual remarks. Their contrasting temperaments form a recurring source of humor and give Saitama a regular companion.
King
Friend
Saitama meets King through their shared interest in games and develops an easy friendship with him. King is among the few people who can spend time with Saitama without making their relationship revolve around his strength. Their relaxed companionship provides Saitama with a welcome distraction from hero work.
Mumen Rider
Fellow hero
Saitama encounters Mumen Rider during the Deep Sea King crisis and sees him continue to stand up to a far stronger enemy. Saitama later protects Mumen Rider's reputation by taking public criticism himself. Their relationship reflects Saitama's respect for courageous effort, regardless of rank or ability.
