Who is Pochita?
A small orange devil shaped like a dog with a chainsaw jutting from its head, found wounded by Denji and kept as both pet and partner. The two share scraps of bread and dreams of an ordinary life. When Denji is murdered, Pochita trades places with him, becoming his heart and granting his powers, asking only that Denji keep living out his simple dreams.
Appearance
A small orange creature roughly the size of a puppy, with a round body, stubby limbs and a stumpy tail. Its most distinctive feature is the chainsaw blade jutting from its forehead, complete with a pull cord in its chest that starts the motor. The eyes are simple black dots and the mouth is a wide, friendly curve of pointed teeth. Early in the series it is visibly weakened, its body bandaged and one eye missing after an injury. In its true form it is a towering, lean humanoid with chainsaws sprouting from the head and both arms.
Personality
Pochita behaves less like a monster than like a loyal dog. It is wordless for most of its screen time, communicating through wagging motion, nuzzling and the eager rev of its blade, and it happily shares Denji's meagre meals of bread and cigarette butts. Beneath the cuteness is something patient and enormously old, a being that chooses devotion over the fear it could command. Its wishes are modest and domestic: it wants its friend to eat properly, sleep in a real bed and live an ordinary life. When it does speak, it is gentle, decisive and entirely without self-pity, framing an irreversible sacrifice as a simple trade between friends.
Background
Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, a being whose very existence is feared enough to make it extraordinarily powerful, yet when the story opens it is a battered little animal found bleeding in the woods. Denji, a boy saddled with his dead father's debt to the yakuza, stops the bleeding and takes it in, and the two live together in a shack, hunting devils for scraps of money and eating almost nothing. Pochita becomes Denji's partner in that work and the only companion he has, listening while he describes the comfortable, boring life he dreams about: jam on toast, a girl to hold, enough sleep. That shared poverty and the promise exchanged within it shape everything that follows.
Role in Chainsaw Man
Denji and Pochita
The opening episode establishes their life together as devil hunters scraping by for the yakuza. When Denji is betrayed, dismembered and left for dead, Pochita makes a bargain and takes the place of his ruined heart, reviving him as a hybrid who can pull a cord in his chest to grow chainsaws from his head and arms.
Public Safety and the Bat Devil
Living inside Denji, Pochita becomes the engine of his new life as a Public Safety devil hunter under Makima. Its blood-fuelled body keeps Denji alive through grotesque injuries, including an aerial battle against the Bat Devil in which blood loss and regeneration decide the fight's outcome.
The Eternity Devil
Trapped in a looping hotel floor with his squad, Denji relies entirely on the heart beating in his chest, repeatedly mutilating himself to feed the chainsaws. Pochita's regeneration lets him endure days of self-destruction, and the devil inside him is implicitly the prize both the Gun Devil's allies and others are hunting.
Katana Man's Attack
In the final episodes the assault on Public Safety is explicitly aimed at Denji's heart. Pochita never acts on its own, but its presence is the reason assassins target him, the reason he survives decapitating wounds, and the reason the series closes with his body as the most contested object in Tokyo.
Dreams and the Contract
Pochita recurs in Denji's dreams and flashes of memory, a small orange shape reminding him why he fights. The terms it set are simple: Denji gets a heart and a chance at an ordinary life, and in exchange Pochita gets to see that dream through his eyes.
Abilities and techniques
Chainsaw transformation
Pulling the cord in Denji's chest converts flesh into roaring chainsaws at the head and both forearms. The blades cut through devils, concrete and vehicles with equal ease and can be retracted at will, reverting the body to human shape.
Regeneration through blood
The hybrid body knits itself back together as long as it has blood, Denji's own or someone else's. Severed limbs, opened throats and crushed torsos repair within seconds, though heavy use leaves Denji drained and ravenously hungry.
Heart replacement
By merging with a corpse, Pochita can serve as a living heart, restoring the dead to life and granting them a share of its power. The arrangement binds the two beings together; neither functions properly without the other.
Devil erasure
As the Chainsaw Devil, Pochita is said to be able to remove devils so completely that even their concept disappears from the world. This makes it an object of terror and desire for other devils and for the humans who hunt them.
Fear-based strength
Like all devils, its power scales with how feared its concept is. The dread attached to chainsaws, and to the Chainsaw Devil specifically, places it far above the ordinary spirits Denji fights for pocket money.
True form
Freed from its diminished shape, Pochita stands as a tall humanoid of whirring blades and bare muscle, a form glimpsed only briefly in the series but enough to mark the little pet as something ancient and catastrophic.
Relationships
- Denji
- Owner, friend and host
- The central bond of the series. Denji saved a dying creature and fed it on scraps; Pochita repaid him with its own body and life. Their contract is affectionate rather than exploitative, built on a promise about a boring, happy future.
- Makima
- Target of her interest
- Makima recruits Denji knowing exactly what beats inside him, treating the Chainsaw Devil as something to be controlled. Pochita's silent presence makes Denji valuable to her, and it is wary of her in a way Denji never is.
- Zombie Devil
- Enemy
- The devil that orchestrates Denji's murder in the opening episode, cutting him apart and leaving the pair for dead. Its attack is what forces Pochita to abandon its small body and take the role of Denji's heart.
- Power
- Fellow devil in Denji's life
- The Blood Fiend becomes Denji's partner and the cat-owning counterpart to Pochita's dog-like devotion, filling the companion role the little devil once held while Pochita remains silent inside his chest.
Notable moments
- Denji finds the wounded little devil in the woods and stops its bleeding, beginning their partnership.
- Pochita offers its heart to the dismembered Denji in exchange for the promise of living out his ordinary dreams.
- Denji pulls the cord in his chest for the first time and tears through the yakuza and the Zombie Devil as Chainsaw Man.
- Pochita's true form appears as a towering humanoid of chainsaws, revealing how little its pet shape had shown.
- Pochita returns in Denji's dreams as a reminder of the simple life he was promised.
Trivia
- Its name comes from a common Japanese name for a pet dog, matching its puppy-like behaviour.
- The pull cord in Denji's chest is a direct carryover from the cord on Pochita's own chest.
- It is almost entirely non-verbal, expressing itself through motion and the sound of its blade.
- Its silhouette became the series' signature logo and merchandise mascot.
- Despite its harmless appearance, it is identified as one of the most feared devils in the setting.
