Who is Gluttony?
Gluttony is a powerful homunculus whose simple-minded appetite makes him dangerous and easy for other homunculi to direct. He often accompanies Lust and Envy, following their instructions with little understanding of the broader plans. His childlike manner contrasts sharply with his capacity for violence, and his unusual nature becomes increasingly important as the Elric brothers uncover the truth about their enemies.
Appearance
Gluttony is a heavyset homunculus with a round face, a bald head, small eyes, and a wide mouth. His simple clothes include a dark sleeveless garment and loose trousers, and the Ouroboros mark appears on his tongue. His expression often looks vacant or eager, particularly when food or the prospect of eating someone is mentioned. The ordinary shape of his mouth conceals a much larger, unnatural opening that can spread across his torso. In the late story, his body is altered into a far more monstrous form.
Personality
Gluttony is simple-minded, impulsive, and governed by appetite. He often speaks and acts with the trusting eagerness of someone who does not understand the consequences of his actions, but his hunger makes him dangerous. He readily follows instructions from the homunculi he trusts, especially Lust, and reacts with distress when she is gone. Gluttony's apparent innocence does not make him harmless: he can consume people without hesitation and has little ability to control himself. Later, Dante's alterations strip away much of his awareness, leaving appetite and aggression to dominate his behavior.
Background
Gluttony is a homunculus associated with Dante and the other members of their group. The series links him to Dante's experiments and presents him as a being whose unusual appetite and consuming power are useful to the homunculi's plans. The exact circumstances of his creation are not explored as fully as the origins of some other homunculi. Before the brothers uncover the truth about him, Gluttony serves as a willing companion and enforcer, usually acting under the guidance of stronger personalities. His attachment to Lust becomes especially important as the homunculi's plans unravel and the people he depends on begin to disappear.
Role in Fullmetal Alchemist
Early encounters
Gluttony appears as a member of the homunculi's circle, often accompanying Lust and acting on the group's orders. His appetite gives the brothers an early indication that the homunculi are not merely skilled alchemists or political agents. He is treated as a blunt instrument, but his eagerness and dependence on others distinguish him from more calculating members.
The homunculi's conspiracy
As Edward and Alphonse pursue the Philosopher's Stone, Gluttony helps the homunculi suppress threats and maintain pressure on the brothers. He is dangerous in direct encounters because he can swallow people and objects whole. His behavior remains comparatively straightforward, allowing others to direct him even as the group's motives become harder to conceal.
Lust's death
Gluttony's bond with Lust becomes clear when she is killed. He reacts with grief and anger, unable to understand why she will not return. His loss makes him easier for Dante to manipulate, and the grief marks a turning point from his earlier, more childlike conduct toward the violence of the final episodes.
The final episodes
Dante changes Gluttony in an effort to remove his awareness and make him easier to control. The alteration leaves him as a powerful, largely mindless creature, and Envy uses him during the conflict in the underground city. His transformation shows the cost of Dante's experiments and turns him into a threat to the Elric brothers.
Abilities and techniques
Consuming maw
Gluttony can open a vast, unnatural mouth that extends across his torso and swallow people or objects whole. The ability makes him a direct threat at close range and can remove a person from a fight instantly. He uses it impulsively, with little concern for what he consumes.
Extreme appetite
Gluttony is driven by an unusually powerful hunger and repeatedly seeks food, including people. This appetite is part of his nature and shapes much of his behavior. It can be exploited by others, who direct his attention or use his hunger to make him act.
Homunculus regeneration
Gluttony can survive injuries that would be fatal to an ordinary person and recover through the power of the Philosopher's Stone inside him. His resilience lets him continue attacking after taking damage. His regenerative capacity, like that of other homunculi, depends on the stone's remaining power.
Enhanced strength
Gluttony has considerable physical strength and can overpower people in a direct struggle. His bulk and ability to grab or swallow opponents make him especially dangerous in close quarters. He relies more on force and appetite than on planning or technical skill.
Monstrous altered form
After Dante suppresses much of Gluttony's mind, his body becomes a larger, more monstrous creature. The altered form is powerful but poorly controlled, with instinct and aggression replacing much of his earlier personality. Envy is able to direct him during the final conflict.
Relationships
- Lust
- Trusted companion
- Gluttony is strongly attached to Lust and often follows her lead. Her death causes him visible grief and anger, because he cannot accept that she is gone. Their bond reveals his capacity for attachment despite his limited understanding and destructive appetite.
- Dante
- Creator and controller
- Dante is connected to Gluttony's creation and later alters him to make him easier to use. Her treatment of him shows how little she values the homunculi as individuals. Gluttony's dependence and limited understanding leave him especially vulnerable to her control.
- Envy
- Fellow homunculus and handler
- Envy takes advantage of Gluttony's altered, diminished awareness during the final episodes. Gluttony follows Envy's direction as they face the Elric brothers in the underground city. Their connection is less affectionate than practical, with Envy using Gluttony as a weapon.
- Edward and Alphonse Elric
- Enemies
- Gluttony encounters the brothers as an agent of the homunculi and poses a serious physical threat through his ability to swallow people whole. Edward and Alphonse must contend with his power while trying to uncover the conspiracy. Their conflict becomes more dangerous after Dante alters Gluttony.
