Who is Lust?

Lust is a homunculus who works to advance the group’s plans while concealing her true nature from humans. Elegant and calculating, she uses manipulation as readily as force. In this series, her connection to the origins of the homunculi complicates her role: beneath her hostility toward the Elrics lies a longing to understand what it means to be human.

Appearance

Lust has long black hair, red eyes, and a poised, self-assured bearing. She wears a fitted black outfit with a deep neckline, drawing attention to the Ouroboros mark on her chest. Her presentation is elegant and controlled, and she often appears more composed than the other homunculi around her. In the 2003 series, her appearance reflects both her role as a dangerous operative and her connection to memories of a former human life. Her restrained expressions can shift into anger or sadness when those memories affect her.

Personality

Lust is calculating, observant, and often more measured than her fellow homunculi. She can manipulate people through charm and careful deception, but her actions are not driven by simple cruelty. Unlike some of the others, she is troubled by fragments of the human life from which she was created and wants to understand what she has lost. That longing makes her increasingly uncertain about her allegiance to Dante and the homunculi. She can be ruthless when pursuing a goal, yet she is capable of empathy and doubt. Her conflict between the instincts of a homunculus and the desire to become human gives her a more reflective and tragic character arc.

Background

In the 2003 continuity, Lust is a homunculus created through a failed human transmutation. She was brought into existence when Scar's brother attempted to restore the woman he loved, and her form and memories retain a connection to that lost person. Over time, Lust becomes part of Dante's network of homunculi and works alongside figures such as Envy and Gluttony. Unlike those who accept their nature without question, she is unsettled by recollections of her former life and seeks a way to become human. Her past remains a source of uncertainty: she has memories and emotional traces, but she is not simply the same person who died.

Role in Fullmetal Alchemist

  1. Early encounters with the Elrics

Lust works behind the scenes as the Elric brothers investigate the Philosopher's Stone and the people pursuing it. She uses deception and her formidable physical abilities to obstruct their progress. Her measured approach distinguishes her from more impulsive homunculi, while her interest in the brothers grows as their research touches on the origins of her kind.

  2. The Philosopher's Stone conspiracy

Lust becomes increasingly involved in the network surrounding the Stone and the military's hidden experiments. She helps conceal the homunculi's activities and intervenes when their plans are threatened. At the same time, encounters with the Elrics and evidence about human transmutation awaken questions about the person whose attempted resurrection created her.

  3. Dublith and the homunculi

The conflict involving Greed and his followers reveals tensions among the homunculi and exposes the limits of their apparent unity. Lust continues to serve the larger plan, but she shows greater awareness of the costs and contradictions behind it. Her actions place her in opposition to the Elrics even as she begins to reconsider what she wants.

  4. The truth of Lust's origin

Lust's connection to Scar's brother and the failed attempt to resurrect his beloved becomes central to her changing outlook. Learning more about her origin intensifies her desire for humanity and gives personal meaning to the memories that have troubled her. She becomes less willing to treat Dante's plans as the only path available.

  5. The final conflict

As the homunculi's plans converge on the Gate, Lust breaks from the role she has long served and acts according to her own judgment. Her uncertain alliance with the Elrics puts her at odds with other homunculi. She is ultimately killed in the confrontation with Wrath, bringing her search for a human identity to an end.

Abilities and techniques

Ultimate Spear

Lust can extend and harden her fingers into long, sharp blades. She uses them to strike at a distance, pierce obstacles, and threaten several opponents in quick succession, making her dangerous both in close combat and across a small gap.

Homunculus regeneration

As a homunculus, Lust can recover from injuries that would incapacitate an ordinary human. Her regeneration is sustained by the power within her, though it is not limitless and can be affected by the remains associated with her original human body.

Physical strength and speed

Lust possesses strength and reaction speed beyond ordinary human capability. She can overpower opponents in direct exchanges and move quickly enough to make her blade-like attacks difficult to evade, complementing her skill at choosing when to engage.

Deception and infiltration

Lust can adopt a convincing, composed manner to gain access to people and places without revealing her nature. She uses social manipulation and carefully selected appearances to advance the homunculi's plans and conceal their involvement.

Homunculus endurance

Lust can continue fighting through severe damage and physical strain that would stop a human combatant. This endurance gives her time to exploit openings and recover, although it does not protect her from every weakness tied to her creation.

Relationships

Dante
Creator and superior
Dante directs the homunculi and sets many of the plans Lust carries out. Lust serves her for much of the series, but their relationship becomes strained as Lust's wish for humanity conflicts with Dante's control and methods.
Gluttony
Fellow homunculus
Lust often travels and works with Gluttony, whose simple-minded loyalty contrasts with her more reflective nature. She can direct him toward a task, but their partnership is shaped by the broader orders and rivalries among the homunculi.
Edward Elric
Opponent and uneasy ally
Lust repeatedly obstructs Edward while he investigates the Philosopher's Stone, yet she also recognizes that his search may reveal truths about her origin. Their relationship shifts as she questions the homunculi's plans and considers acting independently.
Scar's brother
The alchemist whose transmutation created her
Scar's brother attempted to restore the woman he loved, and the failed transmutation produced Lust. The connection to that lost woman gives Lust fragments of memory and longing, influencing her desire to recover a human identity.
