CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS

Who is Lucy?

Lucy is a guarded netrunner who meets David on a Night City train and draws him toward the edgerunner life. She dreams of leaving the city and reaching the Moon, a goal shaped by a painful past under Arasaka's control. Her growing attachment to David conflicts with her instinct to keep secrets and protect him from the corporation's attention.

Appearance

Lucy has pale skin, a short silver-white bob, and vivid reddish eyes. Her futuristic streetwear commonly features a cropped orange jacket, dark fitted clothing, shorts, and tall boots, with visible cybernetic details that suit her work as a netrunner. She moves with controlled precision and often keeps her expression guarded, giving little away to strangers. Her look contrasts sharply with the crowded, neon-lit streets around her, while her compact equipment and practical clothing reflect a life spent moving between digital operations and physical danger.

Personality

Lucy is independent, observant, and careful about whom she trusts. She has a strong instinct for self-preservation, shaped by an earlier life in which other people treated her as a useful tool. Beneath her guarded manner, she is compassionate and capable of deep attachment, especially toward David. She wants a life beyond Night City and sees escape as a chance to reclaim control over her future. Her protective instincts can become secretive: rather than explain the danger she faces, she tries to handle it alone. This leaves David with too little understanding of the forces closing around them and complicates their relationship.

Background

Lucyna Kushinada was raised within an Arasaka facility, where she and other children were trained to operate as netrunners for the corporation. The work involved dangerous excursions into the Old Net, and the children were treated as expendable assets rather than people with independent futures. Lucy escaped Night City with the intention of reaching the Moon, a destination that represents freedom from corporate control. She later works as a netrunner and edgerunner, relying on technical skill and caution to stay alive. Her past with Arasaka remains a source of fear, and she keeps important parts of it hidden even from people she comes to love.

Role in CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS

  1. Meeting David

Lucy encounters David while operating as a netrunner and recognizes that his new Sandevistan makes him useful to a mercenary crew. She introduces him to Maine's group, but her interest in him soon becomes personal. After they grow closer, she shares a private view of the Moon that expresses her desire to leave Night City and live beyond its violence.

  2. Life with Maine's crew

Lucy works alongside David and the others as a skilled netrunner, supporting their jobs while keeping her own history close. When Maine's condition worsens, the crew fractures and David takes on greater responsibility. Lucy remains devoted to him, but her fear that Arasaka will target him because of her past leads her to investigate the corporation on her own.

  3. Protecting David from Arasaka

Lucy uncovers Arasaka's interest in David and tries to stop the corporation from using him as a test subject. To keep him away from the danger, she conceals what she has learned and pursues leads without the crew. Her secrecy strains their relationship, even as the threat she fears becomes more immediate and the crew is drawn into Arasaka's plans.

  4. Escape to the Moon

During the final confrontation, Lucy fights alongside the crew as David uses the cyberskeleton and confronts Arasaka's forces. David's sacrifice gives her the opening to survive and leave Night City. She reaches the Moon, but the place she once imagined as a shared future is now a solitary destination marked by grief and memory.

Abilities and techniques

Netrunning

Lucy can enter computer systems and work through connected networks using her cyberdeck and neural interface. She gathers information, interferes with security, and supports the crew during jobs. Her skill makes her valuable in a city where data systems are closely tied to both corporate power and street-level survival.

Quickhacking

She can compromise connected devices and use them to disrupt opponents or alter the conditions of a fight. Her attacks can disable equipment and create openings for the crew. Effective use depends on access to suitable systems and does not remove the physical danger of operating in the field.

Monowire combat

Lucy wields a monowire, a thin cybernetic weapon that can strike at range and cut through targets. She uses it with careful timing and controlled movement, making it useful when she must defend herself outside the network. It complements her technical role without replacing her need for tactical awareness.

Stealth and infiltration

Lucy favors observation, concealment, and deliberate movement when approaching a target. She can navigate hostile environments without drawing unnecessary attention, then use her cyberware to access protected systems. This cautious method suits her reluctance to expose herself and helps her work independently when the crew is not present.

Operational planning

Her experience lets her assess digital and physical threats before committing to a job. Lucy can identify useful information and anticipate security responses, though her tendency to keep plans private can undermine cooperation. Her judgment is most effective when she shares what she knows with trusted allies.

Relationships

David Martinez
Partner and romantic interest
Lucy brings David into the edgerunner world and becomes his closest emotional connection. They share a wish for a life beyond Night City, but she hides her investigation into Arasaka to protect him. Her secrecy and his determination to carry the crew's burdens pull them apart.
Kiwi
Fellow netrunner and crewmate
Kiwi works with Lucy in Maine's crew and shares the specialized role of netrunner. Their professional connection is shaped by the group's dangerous jobs and the trust required to operate together. Later, Kiwi's choices place Lucy and the crew in greater danger.
Maine
Crew leader and colleague
Maine gives Lucy a place in his edgerunner crew, where her netrunning supports the team's work. She is part of the group that witnesses his decline, though her relationship with him is less personal than her bond with David. His fate reinforces the costs of pushing cyberware too far.
Gloria Martinez
David's mother
Lucy does not develop a direct relationship with Gloria, but Gloria's death shapes David before Lucy meets him. The loss helps explain his anger and his decision to enter the mercenary world. Lucy later becomes one of the people closest to him as he struggles with that grief.
