Who is Kakashi Hatake?
The Copy Ninja leads Team Kakashi through Shippuden's early missions before the war reshapes him into a divisional commander. Long defined by the friends he lost, he finally confronts the truth about Obito and Rin, and inherits a share of his old comrade's power in the final battle. Reserved, wry and endlessly capable, he later accepts the burden of the Sixth Hokage's hat.
Appearance
A lean, tall man with unruly silver hair swept to the left and a perpetually bored, half-lidded dark eye. A dark cloth mask covers his face from the bridge of the nose down, and his forehead protector is slanted to hide the transplanted Sharingan in his left socket. He wears the standard Konoha uniform of a navy long-sleeved bodysuit, green flak jacket, fingerless gloves with metal plates, and sandals. Old ANBU tattoo markings sit on his upper arm. In the war he briefly dons an Allied Forces headband, and later trades the vest for the Hokage's white-and-red haori and hat.
Personality
Outwardly languid and unhurried, Kakashi treats chronic lateness and flimsy excuses as an art form and reads his favourite adult novels in public without embarrassment. Beneath that screen sits a disciplined, analytical tactician who reads opponents with unsettling speed and rarely raises his voice. Years of loss left him fatalistic about his own survival, but fiercely protective of subordinates, and he repeats his old creed that abandoning comrades is worse than breaking rules. He mentors indirectly, nudging Naruto and Sakura toward answers rather than handing them over. Self-deprecating humour masks guilt he has carried since childhood, and only rarely, usually alone or with Might Guy, does his warmth surface openly.
Background
The son of Sakumo Hatake, the celebrated White Fang, Kakashi was a prodigy who graduated the Academy at five and made chunin at six. His father's suicide after being blamed for abandoning a mission left him rigidly rule-bound. Placed under Minato Namikaze alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara, he earned jonin rank young, and during a wartime mission a rockslide crushed Obito, who gave Kakashi his left Sharingan as a parting gift. Rin later died on Kakashi's own blade in circumstances he could not prevent. He served in ANBU under the Third Hokage before taking command of Team 7, whose survivors he was still guiding when Sasuke defected.
Role in Naruto Shippuden
Kazekage Rescue
He leads the reformed Team Kakashi to Suna after Gaara's abduction, awakening the Mangekyo Sharingan and using its space-time technique for the first time to tear away part of Deidara's body. The strain hospitalises him, foreshadowing the toll his borrowed eye takes whenever he pushes it past its limits.
Akatsuki Suppression Mission
Grounded from heavy combat, he turns instructor, devising the nature-transformation training that lets Naruto build a wind-based Rasengan. He then takes the field against Kakuzu, restraining the immortal long enough for his student to land the finishing blow and formally passing his own signature lightning technique's legacy forward.
Pain's Assault
Defending a village already reduced to a crater, he duels the Deva Path, sacrificing his remaining chakra to let Choji escape with critical intelligence, and dies seeing his father again in the afterlife. Nagato's final act restores him, and the council afterward nominates him as the Sixth Hokage candidate.
Fourth Shinobi World War
Commanding the Third Division, he learns that the masked enemy is Obito and fights his old friend across dimensions, eventually gaining a second Mangekyo through Obito's chakra and manifesting a complete Susanoo. He loses both Sharingan in the process, ending the conflict as a normal shinobi and afterward accepting the Hokage's hat.
Abilities and techniques
Sharingan
The transplanted Uchiha eye grants him predictive vision, hypnotic genjutsu and the ability to memorise enemy techniques, giving rise to his copy ninja reputation and a personal repertoire said to exceed a thousand jutsu, though it constantly drains his chakra.
Kamui
His Mangekyo technique warps a targeted area into a separate dimension, letting him remove limbs, banish attacks entirely, or shift his own body to become intangible. Early on each use costs him days of recovery; by the war he wields it with combat fluency.
Lightning Blade and Chidori
His only self-created technique concentrates lightning chakra into a piercing thrust that can punch through stone and flesh alike. The Sharingan compensates for the tunnel vision the charge causes, and he later shapes the current into hounds, spears and blades.
Elemental versatility
He commands lightning, earth, water, fire, wind and yang release, producing mud walls, water dragons and lightning clones as situations demand, and he frequently opens engagements with a decoy technique to bait out an opponent's true method.
Ninken summoning
He summons a pack of talking tracker hounds led by the blunt little pug Pakkun, using their scent-tracking to pursue targets across countries and to pin enemies in place for a killing strike.
Tactical command
Renowned as one of Konoha's finest field leaders, he assesses enemy formations instantly, designs multi-stage traps and coordinates mixed-village squads, qualities that earn him divisional command during the war and, ultimately, the Hokage's office.
Relationships
- Naruto Uzumaki
- Student
- He teaches Naruto teamwork, wind chakra and the value of restraint, while quietly recognising his student surpassing him. Their bond mirrors the one Kakashi shared with Minato, and he entrusts the village's future to him without hesitation.
- Obito Uchiha
- Former teammate and enemy
- The friend whose eye he carries returns as the masked architect of the war. Kakashi fights him with grief rather than hatred, refusing to disown him, and ultimately receives the power to end the battle from Obito himself.
- Sakura Haruno
- Student
- He watches her grow from the weakest member of Team 7 into a medic capable of holding a battlefield line, offering support during her crises of confidence over Sasuke and trusting her with frontline responsibility in the war.
- Might Guy
- Self-proclaimed rival and closest friend
- Guy's relentless challenges provide the comedy that keeps Kakashi tethered, and their mutual trust runs deep enough that Kakashi carries him from the battlefield after Guy burns away his own life force.
- Sasuke Uchiha
- Student
- Kakashi sees his own vengeance-driven youth in Sasuke and blames himself for failing to reach him. He repeatedly places himself between Sasuke and the friends hunting him, still hoping to pull him back.
Notable moments
- He unleashes Kamui in open combat for the first time, ripping away part of Deidara's arm during the pursuit of the Akatsuki.
- He trains Naruto in nature transformation, producing the wind-natured Rasengan that finally brings down Kakuzu.
- He gives his life shielding the retreat of Choji and vital intelligence during Pain's destruction of Konoha.
- He confronts Obito face to face and fights him through Kamui's dimension, refusing to let his old friend die alone.
- He is inaugurated as the Sixth Hokage after the war ends, having lost the Sharingan that defined his career.
Trivia
- His face beneath the mask is finally shown to viewers during the anime's late-series material, a running gag built up over hundreds of episodes.
- His nose is buried in Jiraiya's adult novel series in nearly every idle scene he appears in.
- The ANBU-era chapter of his life is dramatised in a dedicated anime arc detailing his time under codename and his bond with Yamato.
- He is the only Hokage in the series to hold the office without any kekkei genkai or unique chakra by the time he is appointed.
- His ninken pack members each have distinct personalities, with Pakkun frequently complaining about his paw care.
