Who is Kakashi Hatake?

The perpetually late, mask-wearing jōnin assigned to Team 7, Kakashi hides grief and guilt behind a lazy manner and a pocket novel. Famous as the Copy Ninja for the hundreds of techniques his transplanted Sharingan has stolen, he teaches his students that those who abandon comrades are worse than trash - a lesson learned from the friend whose eye he carries.

Appearance

A tall, lean man with spiky silver-grey hair that leans to one side and a habitually bored, half-lidded expression. A dark cloth mask covers everything below his eyes, and his forehead protector is worn tilted to cover his left eye, hiding a vertical scar and the transplanted Sharingan beneath it. He wears the standard Konoha uniform: a dark blue long-sleeved bodysuit, green flak jacket, fingerless gloves with metal plates, and shinobi sandals. A tanto was once strapped to his back during ANBU days. He is rarely seen without a small orange adult novel in hand.

Personality

Outwardly lazy, chronically late, and fond of flimsy excuses, Kakashi hides a sharp strategic mind and deep protectiveness behind a bored drawl and a buried nose in a book. He teaches through lessons rather than lectures, insisting that shinobi who abandon comrades are worse than those who break rules, a creed born of personal grief. He is difficult to rattle, defusing tense moments with dry humor, but becomes cold and decisive when his students are threatened. Guilt over the deaths of his father and teammates left him emotionally guarded, slow to voice affection, and prone to shouldering responsibility alone. Even so, he takes obvious quiet pride in Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura.

Background

Kakashi is the son of Sakumo Hatake, the celebrated White Fang of the Leaf, who abandoned a mission to save his comrades and was disgraced for it, later taking his own life. Driven to become the perfect rule-following shinobi, Kakashi graduated the Academy at five, made chunin at six, and reached jonin as a child. Placed on a squad under Minato Namikaze alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara, he clashed with Obito over mission priorities until a cave collapse during the war left Obito dying; Obito had his Sharingan transplanted into Kakashi's damaged left eye socket as a parting gift. Rin's death followed. Kakashi then served years in the ANBU Black Ops before being assigned a genin team.

Role in Naruto

  1. Team 7 Formation

Assigned to the newly formed Team 7, he arrives late, dismisses his students as unimpressive, and sets the infamous bell test. By pitting the three genin against each other over two bells, he exposes their selfishness, then passes them only after they choose cooperation, teaching that comrades matter more than mission success.

  2. Land of Waves

Escorting the bridge builder Tazuna, he faces the rogue swordsman Zabuza Momochi and unveils his Sharingan for the first time, copying Zabuza's water techniques before being trapped in a water prison. In the rematch he tracks Zabuza with his ninken and ends the duel with his Lightning Blade, then mourns a worthy opponent.

  3. Chunin Exams

He nominates Team 7 for the exams, then seals Orochimaru's curse mark on Sasuke and warns the boy about its pull. During the month before the finals he takes Sasuke into private training, honing his speed and teaching him the Chidori, while deliberately entrusting Naruto to Jiraiya.

  4. Search for Tsunade

Following the invasion of Konoha, he intercepts Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki when they come hunting Naruto. Outmatched by Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan, he is trapped in a crushing genjutsu and left comatose, only recovering after Tsunade returns to the village and treats his shattered mind.

  5. Sasuke Retrieval

When Sasuke defects to Orochimaru, Kakashi summons his tracking hounds and races after him alongside Naruto's rescue squad. He reaches the Valley of the End too late, finding only a defeated Naruto in the rain, and carries him home while quietly refusing to let the boy blame himself.

Abilities and techniques

Sharingan

His transplanted left eye perceives chakra flow, predicts movement, and copies nearly any technique it observes. Because he is not an Uchiha, it cannot be deactivated at will and drains his stamina badly, forcing him to keep it covered outside of serious combat.

Lightning Blade / Chidori

His sole original technique, concentrating lightning chakra into a screaming fistful of energy used as a piercing thrust. The tunnel vision it causes makes it viable only with the Sharingan to track a dodging opponent, and he limits himself to a few uses per day.

Copied Jutsu Arsenal

Reputed to have copied over a thousand techniques, he switches freely between fire, water, earth, and lightning natures, plus shadow clones and countless traps, letting him counter almost any style mid-battle without hesitation.

Ninken Summoning

He summons a pack of talking tracking dogs led by the small, gruff pug Pakkun. Used for scent pursuit, reconnaissance, and pinning enemies in place, most memorably with the Earth Style tracking fang technique that locates a target underground.

Tactical Insight

A veteran ANBU captain, he reads enemy formations and jutsu mechanics almost instantly, formulates layered contingency plans, and tailors instruction to each student's temperament and chakra nature rather than teaching a single fixed style.

Relationships

Naruto Uzumaki
Student
Initially the student he has the least time for, Naruto gradually earns his respect through sheer stubbornness. Kakashi recognizes echoes of his own teacher Minato in the boy and steers him toward Jiraiya for training he cannot provide.
Sasuke Uchiha
Student
He sees his younger self in Sasuke's isolation and revenge-driven focus, and trains him personally while pleading with him to value his remaining bonds. His failure to keep Sasuke in the village haunts him.
Obito Uchiha
Late teammate
The comrade whose eye he carries and whose creed about protecting friends he adopted. Kakashi visits the memorial stone daily, a habit that explains his perpetual lateness better than any of his excuses.
Might Guy
Self-declared rival
The exuberant taijutsu jonin challenges him to absurd contests ranging from rock-paper-scissors to races. Kakashi's unbothered, aloof responses infuriate Guy, though the two trust each other completely in the field.
Itachi Uchiha
Enemy
A former fellow ANBU turned Akatsuki criminal who outclasses him in genjutsu. Their encounter leaves Kakashi hospitalized and convinces him of how far his own students still have to go.

Notable moments

  • Revealing his Sharingan for the first time in front of his students during the duel with Zabuza on the misty lake.
  • Passing Team 7 after they defy his instructions to share lunch, declaring rule-breakers better than comrade-abandoners at the memorial stone.
  • Applying the Evil Sealing Method to Sasuke's curse mark in the Forest of Death.
  • Being overwhelmed by Itachi's Tsukuyomi and left in a coma until Tsunade's return.
  • Arriving at the Valley of the End in the rain to find Naruto unconscious and Sasuke gone.

Trivia

  • His name uses the characters for scarecrow, which suits his lanky, slouching posture.
  • No character in the series sees his full face, and running gags revolve around failed attempts to unmask him.
  • He is an avid reader of Jiraiya's adult novel series, carrying a volume even into combat zones.
  • He states a fondness for saury and dislikes fried foods and sweet things.
  • He was made a jonin at an age when most of his students were still infants.
