Iruka Umino

The Academy teacher who lost his own parents to the Nine-Tailed Fox attack, Iruka recognises his childhood loneliness in Naruto's attention-seeking pranks. He is the first adult to see the boy rather than the beast sealed inside him, and the ramen dinners and blunt encouragement he offers become the foundation of Naruto's self-belief. He remains a quiet moral anchor throughout the series.

Iruka is a tan-skinned adult of average build with dark brown hair pulled up into a short, spiky ponytail. His defining feature is a long horizontal scar running straight across the bridge of his nose and both cheeks. He wears the standard Konoha uniform: a dark blue long-sleeved shirt and trousers with a high collar, a green flak jacket, sandals and a forehead protector worn conventionally over his brow. In the classroom he is usually seen with a clipboard or scroll in hand. His expression shifts easily between warm patience and a sharp, loud scolding face.

Iruka is warm, principled and endlessly patient with children, though he has a famously short fuse when his students misbehave and a scolding voice that carries across the village. He is not a spectacular fighter and knows it, but he possesses enormous moral courage and will put his body between danger and someone he cares about without hesitating. His defining trait is empathy: having been an orphan and a disruptive attention-seeker himself, he recognises the same loneliness in Naruto and chooses to see the boy rather than the fox sealed inside him. He worries like a parent, argues with senior shinobi when he thinks his students are being pushed too fast, and expresses affection most often over a bowl of ramen.

Iruka grew up in Konoha and lost both parents during the Nine-Tailed Fox's attack on the village, an event that left him alone as a child. Craving the attention he no longer received at home, he became the class clown of the Academy, pulling pranks and disrupting lessons in exactly the way Naruto later would. Teachers and villagers grew exasperated with him, but he eventually channelled his need to be acknowledged into hard work, graduated, and rose to the rank of chunin. Rather than pursue field glory he returned to the Academy as an instructor, working under the Third Hokage and teaching the generation that includes Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura.

1. Prologue: Graduation and Mizuki's Treachery

   Iruka opens the series as the exasperated teacher of Naruto's failing class. When his colleague Mizuki tricks Naruto into stealing a forbidden scroll and then reveals the secret of the sealed Nine-Tails, Iruka shields the boy with his own body and declares him a valued student. Naruto defeats Mizuki, and Iruka gives him his own forehead protector.

2. Chunin Exams

   Learning that all three rookie squads have been nominated, Iruka confronts the Hokage and the jonin sensei, arguing that his former students are too inexperienced for an exam that regularly kills participants. Kakashi bluntly reminds him that they are no longer his pupils. Iruka later watches the matches anxiously and is proved partly wrong by Naruto's growth.

3. Konoha Crush

   When Sand and Sound forces attack during the finals, Iruka fights among the village's defenders and works to protect civilians and Academy children caught in the assault. In the aftermath he grieves publicly at the Third Hokage's funeral, standing with Naruto in the rain as the village mourns the man who had sheltered them both.

4. Mizuki Strikes Back

   Mizuki escapes confinement using a forbidden strength-enhancing formula, and Iruka is forced to face his former friend again. Aided by Naruto and confronted by Mizuki's devoted fiancee Tsubaki, Iruka fights a physically superior opponent and refuses to abandon the belief that people can choose to change, finally bringing the traitor down.

5. Ongoing Mentorship

   Across the series Iruka remains Naruto's anchor in the village, treating him to ramen at Ichiraku, offering encouragement before difficult missions, and consoling him after failures such as the Sasuke retrieval. He also teaches the next Academy class, including Konohamaru's group, carrying his approach forward to another generation.

Former student and surrogate family

The first person to acknowledge Naruto as an individual rather than the fox's container. Iruka scolds, feeds and defends him in equal measure, and Naruto regards him as the closest thing he has to a parent.

Mizuki

Former colleague and traitor

Once a fellow Academy instructor and friend, Mizuki manipulates Naruto and nearly kills Iruka to obtain a forbidden scroll. Their later rematch forces Iruka to weigh loyalty and disappointment against his belief in redemption.

Hiruzen Sarutobi

Superior and mentor

The Third Hokage supported Iruka's assignment to Naruto's class and shared his conviction that the boy deserved compassion. Iruka respects him deeply and takes his death particularly hard.

Kakashi Hatake

Professional counterpart

The two clash over nominating the rookies for the Chunin Exams, with Kakashi arguing that growth requires risk. Despite the friction they respect each other, both invested in the same students from different angles.

Konohamaru Sarutobi

Student

The Third Hokage's grandson passes through Iruka's classroom with his friends Moegi and Udon, giving Iruka a fresh batch of troublemakers and showing his teaching continuing beyond Naruto's generation.
