Who is Konohamaru Sarutobi?
Naruto's former student and now a jōnin, Konohamaru leads Team 7 and acts as the older-brother figure Boruto can actually reach. He balances affection with discipline, often covering for his students' recklessness. Missions involving Kara and the Land of Silence repeatedly put him in situations far above a squad leader's pay grade, and he faces them with the stubborn optimism he learned from Naruto.
Appearance
Konohamaru has grown into a tall, lean adult with a confident, easy posture. His dark brown hair is cut in choppy layers that fall past his ears, and he has narrow dark eyes that still carry a mischievous glint. He wears the standard Konoha jonin outfit: a dark long-sleeved bodysuit, the green flak jacket, shinobi sandals and a forehead protector worn across his brow rather than the childhood goggles and long scarf people remember. He usually carries a pouch of tools and the trench-knife style chakra blades inherited from his late teacher, and he is frequently seen slouching with his hands in his pockets.
Personality
Konohamaru is warm, loud and endlessly informal, treating his students more like younger siblings than subordinates. He jokes constantly, cuts corners on paperwork and can be dramatic about his own heroism, yet he takes the safety of his squad with total seriousness and will put himself between them and danger without hesitation. He inherited his grandfather's belief that the village's children are its future and his teacher's patience for difficult pupils, which makes him uniquely suited to handling Boruto's rebellious streak. He is quick to praise, blunt when scolding, and allergic to pretension, especially about the Hokage title he once loudly claimed he would win.
Background
Konohamaru is the grandson of Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, and grew up burdened by everyone addressing him only as the Honorable Grandson. As a child he latched onto Naruto Uzumaki, who treated him as a person instead of a title, declaring himself Naruto's rival and eagerly copying his pranks and techniques. He trained under the tutor Ebisu and later under Asuma Sarutobi, adopting his uncle's fighting style and blades after his death. He fought in the invasion of Pain, where he defeated one of the attacker's bodies with the Rasengan Naruto taught him, and served in the Fourth Great Ninja War. By the time of the new generation he has risen to jonin and taken on his first genin squad.
Role in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Academy and Team 7 formation
After Boruto's class graduates, Konohamaru is assigned the squad of Boruto, Sarada and Mitsuki, a deliberately chosen pairing given his history with the Hokage's family. He sets the tone with pranks and unorthodox drills, teaches Boruto the Rasengan, and quietly nudges the boy toward understanding why his father is never home.
Chunin Exams and the Otsutsuki attack
Konohamaru guides his team through the exams, proud of their growth but unsettled by Boruto's obsession with proving himself. When the tournament is shattered by an invasion from beyond the village, he joins the evacuation and defence effort, and afterwards supports Boruto's decision to earn recognition through effort rather than shortcuts.
Mujina Bandits and Land of Silence
Leading Team 7 on genuinely dangerous assignments, Konohamaru helps pursue a body-stealing criminal and his gang, escorting prisoners and coordinating with other squads. The missions force him to judge how much risk his students can carry, and he begins treating them as colleagues rather than children under supervision.
Kara Actuation
Sent to investigate a mysterious crashed vessel near the Land of Valleys, Konohamaru is ambushed by a heavily augmented former shinobi wielding advanced scientific ninja tools. Gravely wounded and nearly killed, he survives thanks to his students' arrival and brings back the first hard evidence of the organisation Kara and its weapons trafficking.
Kawaki and the vessel crisis
With a strange boy living in the Hokage's home and Kara agents infiltrating the region, Konohamaru shifts into a protective role, running patrols, backing up investigations and shielding the genin from decisions made above their heads. He continues to serve as Boruto's sounding board as the boy's own body begins changing.
Abilities and techniques
Rasengan
Taught to him by Naruto, the spiralling sphere of concentrated chakra is Konohamaru's signature finishing move. He can form it quickly, combine it with shadow clones for support, and he passes the technique down to Boruto, who later warps it into his own variation.
Wind Release
His primary nature transformation, used for cutting gusts and pressurised blasts. He channels wind chakra into his blades and can add it to the Rasengan, following the path his teacher Asuma took with chakra-enhanced weaponry.
Flying Swallow and chakra blades
Konohamaru fights with the trench knives left behind by Asuma, extending their reach and sharpness with flowing chakra. The style lets him duel armed opponents at close range and cut through targets that ordinary steel cannot damage.
Shadow Clone Technique
He produces solid clones for scouting, decoys and layered attacks, often using them to cover a student's retreat or to set up a strike from an unexpected angle. It is also the core of much of his teaching.
Fire Release
As a Sarutobi he commands fire techniques, breathing out flame walls and bursts to control battlefields or destroy obstacles, a nod to the clan style his grandfather was famous for.
Instruction and squad command
His greatest asset is reading his students. He designs training around individual weaknesses, calibrates missions to their growth, and defuses friction between three very different personalities without ever making it feel like discipline.
Relationships
- Boruto Uzumaki
- Student
- Konohamaru sees his own younger self in Boruto's attention-seeking mischief and refuses to give up on him. He teaches him the Rasengan, absorbs his tantrums, and acts as the adult who explains Naruto's absences honestly.
- Naruto Uzumaki
- Mentor and older brother figure
- Naruto was the first person to treat Konohamaru as an individual, and that debt shapes his career. He now serves the Hokage loyally while remaining one of the few people who will tease him without ceremony.
- Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki
- Students
- He encourages Sarada's ambition toward the Hokage seat and treats Mitsuki's unsettling background with acceptance rather than suspicion, insisting the boy's choices matter more than his origins.
- Hanabi Hyuga
- Implied romantic interest
- Their scattered interactions carry an awkward mutual fondness that the series treats as an open joke among friends, with Konohamaru unable to act on it with anything like his usual confidence.
- Asuma Sarutobi
- Late uncle and teacher
- Asuma's fighting style, chakra blades and belief in guarding the next generation define how Konohamaru operates as a jonin instructor, making his squad leadership a continuation of his uncle's legacy.
Notable moments
- He is entrusted with the Hokage's son as his very first genin squad leader assignment.
- He teaches Boruto the Rasengan, the technique Naruto once taught him.
- He survives a near-fatal ambush by a cybernetically enhanced enemy while investigating a crashed vessel.
- He brings back the first concrete proof that an organisation is flooding the ninja world with scientific ninja tools.
- He repeatedly defends Boruto's choices to village officials who see only the Hokage's troublesome child.
Trivia
- He is the grandson of Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage.
- He carries and fights with the trench knives that belonged to Asuma Sarutobi.
- He was named after the village itself, which his grandfather founded the era of.
- As a child he declared himself Naruto's rival for the title of Hokage, a goal he now supports from the sidelines.
