Who is Armin Arlert?

Physically the weakest of the trio and painfully aware of it, Armin compensates with a quick, analytical mind fed by forbidden books about the outside world - oceans, deserts, lands of ice. Prone to panic yet capable of astonishing composure, he conceives the plan to use Eren's Titan form to seal the breach at Trost and later helps expose the identity of the Female Titan.

Appearance

The smallest and slightest of the three friends, with a narrow frame that the harness straps seem to swallow. He has pale blond hair cut in a blunt bowl shape that falls over his forehead and ears, and wide blue eyes that make him look younger and more startled than he is. His expressions carry most of his characterization: he is drawn flinching, calculating or wide-eyed with sudden understanding far more often than he is drawn angry. He wears the same cadet and Survey Corps uniform as the others, and the contrast between his physical slightness and the heavy steel blades he carries is deliberate and frequently emphasized.

Personality

Armin is anxious, self-critical and acutely aware that he is the physically weakest person in any room, which he repeatedly calls a burden on his friends. He is also the sharpest analyst among the cadets, able to read a battlefield in seconds and assemble a plan from scraps of information while everyone else is panicking. Curiosity is his defining drive: he wants to see the ocean and the world outside far more than he wants glory. He is gentle, honest and easily frightened, yet he has a stubborn moral spine, arguing for Eren in front of leveled rifles and volunteering for the most dangerous roles precisely because he does not believe his own life is worth more than anyone else's.

Background

Armin grew up in Shiganshina as the grandson of an elderly man who raised him after his parents' deaths. The family owned contraband books describing oceans, mountains of fire, fields of ice and sand, and Armin shared them with Eren, seeding the obsession with the outside world that drove them both. He was frequently beaten by other children for insisting the Walls were not eternal, and Eren and Mikasa defended him. After Wall Maria fell, his grandfather was conscripted into the disastrous operation to retake the territory and never returned, leaving Armin alone with his two friends. He enlisted alongside them, bringing analytical ability rather than physical strength to the Training Corps.

Role in Attack on Titan

  1. The Fall of Shiganshina

He survives the breach and the evacuation and loses his grandfather to the refugee conscription that follows. Living on rationed bread in the interior with Eren and Mikasa, he absorbs the lesson that the Walls offer no safety, and he enters the military with the two people who have always shielded him.

  2. 104th Training Corps

Physically outmatched at nearly every exercise, Armin compensates with theory and finishes within the top ten of his class. His weakness in hand-to-hand and his poor stamina are constant sources of shame, and his instructors note that his intelligence is the only reason he ranks where he does.

  3. The Battle of Trost District

His squad is destroyed and Eren is eaten in front of him, leaving him catatonic on a rooftop. He recovers, talks Mikasa back from the brink, and then devises the plan to use the Titan Eren has become to plug the breached gate. He also faces down the Garrison alone to keep his friends from being executed.

  4. The 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls

Riding in the formation, Armin is among the first to realize that the Female Titan is being controlled by a person and is deliberately searching for Eren. His deduction, and a tense encounter in which he talks his way out of being killed, gives command the information that shapes the trap in the forest.

  5. Assault on Stohess

Armin reasons out the identity of the Female Titan from small details and is the one who must state it aloud to people who do not want to hear it. He accompanies Eren into the capital, serves as the voice of the trap, and forces a confrontation that neither he nor his friends wanted.

Abilities and techniques

Strategic analysis

His defining skill. He assembles conclusions from fragments other soldiers dismiss, identifying the human intelligence behind the Female Titan and reconstructing her identity from behavior and circumstance rather than evidence anyone else recognizes as proof.

Battlefield improvisation

Under pressure he produces workable plans in moments, most famously the proposal to have the Titan-shifted Eren carry a boulder to the breach. He also grasps quickly how to redeploy panicking cadets and how to use terrain and supply depots.

Persuasion under threat

He argues for his friends' lives while rifles are aimed at him and negotiates with an opponent who could kill him instantly. His honesty and evident fear make him convincing where bluster would fail.

Knowledge of the outside world

Years with his grandfather's forbidden books give him a vocabulary for oceans, deserts, ice fields and burning water that almost no one else inside the Walls possesses, and that knowledge repeatedly frames how the group interprets what they find.

Maneuvering gear and blades

Competent but unremarkable. He can move and cut effectively, and he does kill Titans, but his limited strength and stamina mean he survives engagements through positioning and support rather than through direct confrontation.

Relationships

Eren Yeager
Childhood friend
The person who first defended him from bullies and the one he gave a dream to. Armin's descriptions of the sea shaped Eren's ambitions, and Armin repeatedly stakes his own life on Eren's.
Mikasa Ackerman
Childhood friend
He is the only person able to pull her out of despair in Trost, and she in turn shields him physically. Their partnership balances his mind against her capability.
Armin's grandfather
Guardian
Raised him and owned the forbidden books that shaped his worldview. Sent out with the refugee expedition to retake Wall Maria, he never came home, and Armin blames the system rather than himself only with effort.
Erwin Smith
Commander
Recognizes Armin's mind and takes his deductions seriously despite his low rank and youth, giving him a central role in the operation to expose the Female Titan inside the capital.
