Jean Kirstein

Sixth in the cadet class and honest about his motives, Jean trains hard purely to qualify for the Military Police and a safe life in the interior. He clashes constantly with Eren, whom he considers a suicidal idiot. The slaughter at Trost and the death of his friend Marco break that plan apart, revealing a reluctant natural leader who reads a battlefield better than anyone around him.

Jean is one of the taller cadets, lean and broad-shouldered with a narrow, long-jawed face that invites the horse comparisons Eren throws at him. His hair is two-toned: ash-brown on top, shaved short and much lighter at the sides and back in an undercut. His eyes are a sharp amber-brown, usually narrowed in irritation or scepticism. He wears the standard cadet outfit of white trousers, brown jacket, harness straps and tall boots, with the Training Corps crest on the back; after graduation he swaps it for the Survey Corps jacket and the green hooded cloak bearing the Wings of Freedom.

Jean is the most openly self-interested member of his class and, paradoxically, the most honest about it. He says out loud what other cadets only think: that he trained hard so he could live safely in the interior, that suicidal bravery is stupid, that he is frightened. This bluntness makes him abrasive, especially toward Eren, whom he needles constantly and eventually brawls with. Underneath the sneering, though, he is observant, quick to read a situation and unusually good at judging what people can actually do under pressure. Loss forces the rest of him into the open: once he accepts responsibility he becomes a steady, clear-headed leader who keeps others alive by thinking instead of charging.

Jean grew up in the Trost District, a walled town on the southern edge of Wall Rose, raised by a doting mother whose fussing embarrassed him. Unlike the children of Shiganshina, he never watched a Titan come through a gate, and the walls felt permanent to him. He enlisted in the 104th Training Corps at the standard age with a plain, unromantic goal: place in the top ten, earn a Military Police commission and spend his service in the safe interior capital. He proved a natural with the vertical manoeuvring equipment, praised by instructors for his balance, and he made his closest friendship with the good-natured Marco Bodt, who insisted Jean's honesty about his own weakness was a strength.

1. 104th Training Corps

   Introduced during training as the cadet who openly admits he is aiming for the Military Police and a comfortable life. He clashes with Eren over what he calls suicidal idealism, and their argument escalates into a fistfight at dinner. Marco keeps defending him, arguing that Jean's willingness to name his own fear is exactly what makes soldiers follow him.

2. Battle of Trost

   Graduating sixth, Jean is thrown into the defence of his own home district when the Colossal Titan breaches the gate. Cut off with the gas supply seized, he leads a panicked group of cadets toward the depot, takes a decoy role himself, and afterward finds Marco dead among the collected bodies, a loss that quietly destroys the future he had planned.

3. Eren's trial and the choice of regiment

   With Eren revealed as a Titan shifter, Jean is among the cadets questioned about Trost. At the regiment selection he stands with the recruits who stay when Commander Erwin invites them to die for humanity, abandoning the Military Police path he trained years for and joining the Survey Corps using Marco's recovered equipment.

4. The Female Titan and the 57th Expedition

   Assigned to the long-range scouting formation outside the walls, Jean rides the flank as the mission collapses under the Female Titan's assault. He is among those who help bait and restrain her with Erwin's trap, watches squadmates die for an operation he only partly understands, and returns to the city for the plan to unmask her.

Marco Bodt

Closest friend in the 104th

Marco was the one person who took Jean's self-serving honesty and reframed it as leadership. Finding his half-eaten body after Trost is the hinge of Jean's whole character, and he carries Marco's gear afterward.

Eren Yeager

Rival

Constant antagonists in training, trading insults and blows over whether fighting Titans is courage or stupidity. Jean's contempt slowly cools into a wary respect he refuses to state plainly, even after Eren's power is revealed.

Mikasa Ackerman

Fellow cadet and unrequited attraction

Jean is visibly struck by Mikasa from their first meeting and becomes flustered around her, which fuels part of his hostility toward Eren, the one person she genuinely centres her life on.

Jean respects Armin's analytical mind more readily than he respects anyone's courage, listening to his reasoning at Trost and cooperating with him during the Survey Corps operations that follow.

Part of the cluster of 104th survivors who stay together after Trost. Jean plays the exasperated straight man to their antics while relying on them as the few people who understand what he lived through.
