A squad leader whose fascination with Titans borders on mania, Hange captures live specimens for experiments and names them affectionately. The manic enthusiasm masks a rigorous scientific mind: Hange's findings about Titan weight, regeneration and weak points shape how the Corps fights. Eren's transformation makes him the ultimate research subject, and Hange's excitement over him is matched only by genuine care for his wellbeing.

Hange is tall and lean, with long brown hair pulled up into a high, habitually messy ponytail and a fringe that falls loose around the face. Their most constant feature is a pair of rounded, goggle-like glasses worn pushed up on the nose, which catch the light and hide their brown eyes during moments of manic excitement. They wear the standard Survey Corps uniform with the maneuvering gear harness and the green Wings of Freedom cloak, usually rumpled and worn far less neatly than Levi would prefer. Their face is enormously expressive, swinging between wide-eyed delight and blank exhaustion.

Hange is the Survey Corps' resident scientist, driven by a consuming curiosity about Titans that borders on affection. They name captured specimens, talk to them, mourn them, and describe experiments with breathless enthusiasm that unsettles everyone in the room. That same obsessiveness makes them a formidable researcher: they document everything, form testable theories, and revise conclusions when evidence contradicts them. Hange is untidy, sleeps badly, and forgets meals when absorbed in work. Yet when lives are at stake they become abruptly focused and capable, issuing clear orders as a squad leader. They value knowledge over comfort and are willing to be feared or mocked if it means learning something that might save humanity.

Hange joined the Survey Corps as an ordinary soldier who, by their own account, once hated Titans as much as anyone else. That changed after a personal encounter in which a Titan's body proved unexpectedly light and strange, turning revulsion into fascination. From that point they devoted themselves to studying the enemy rather than simply killing it, campaigning for permission to capture live specimens and developing methods of restraint, measurement and testing. Erwin Smith supported the research, and Hange rose to command their own squad within the corps while continuing to lead experiments. By the time Eren Yeager is placed in Survey Corps custody, Hange already maintains two captive Titans for study and has accumulated years of notes that no other branch of the military takes seriously.

1. Eren's Custody and the Old Headquarters

   Hange greets Eren with overwhelming enthusiasm, delighted that a human who becomes a Titan has fallen into their hands. They keep the boy up late describing their experiments in detail, explain the research program's purpose, and immediately begin planning tests to determine the limits of his transformation.

2. The Titan Specimens

   Hange maintains two captured Titans nicknamed by their keeper and treats them almost as colleagues, using them to test pain response and behavior. When an unknown saboteur kills both creatures overnight, Hange is devastated, and the incident becomes the corps' first hard evidence of an enemy operating from inside the Walls.

3. 57th Exterior Scouting Mission

   Hange rides with the expedition and takes charge of the specialized capture equipment intended for an intelligent Titan, coordinating the ambush in the forest of giant trees. When the Female Titan escapes the trap, Hange's plans and instruments are as thoroughly wrecked as the corps' formation.

4. The Stohess Operation

   Back inside the Walls, Hange helps prepare the equipment and the plan to seize the suspected shifter in the interior district, supporting Erwin and Armin's reasoning. Their appetite for a living, intelligent specimen shapes how the capture is attempted rather than a simple execution.

Hange is thrilled by Eren's Titan ability and eager to test it, yet treats him as a person whose cooperation matters, explaining their reasoning to him rather than simply experimenting on an unwilling body.

Their partnership runs on friction, with Levi mocking Hange's hygiene and attachment to Titans while Hange needles him in return. Both nevertheless rely on each other's competence during operations.
