Erwin Smith

The thirteenth commander of the Survey Corps, Erwin is a charismatic strategist willing to spend lives - including his own - for a step toward the truth behind the walls. He argues for Eren's custody before the tribunal and designs the long-range scouting formation, then the deliberately baited expedition intended to capture the Female Titan. Soldiers follow him not because he promises survival, but because he promises meaning.

Erwin is tall, broad-shouldered and imposing, with the build of a career soldier who still rides at the front of his own formations. His blond hair is cut short and combed back with a clean side part, and his most recognizable feature is a pair of unusually thick, heavy eyebrows above pale blue eyes that rarely betray what he is thinking. He wears the Survey Corps uniform with a bolo tie beneath the collar and the green Wings of Freedom cloak, and on formal occasions he presents himself with parade-ground neatness. His expression is typically calm, measured and difficult to read.

Erwin is a strategist first and a soldier second, capable of weighing hundreds of lives against a single piece of information and choosing the information. He speaks with quiet authority, rarely argues, and prefers to maneuver opponents into agreeing with him. He is honest about the cost of his decisions and never pretends that the deaths he orders are anything other than deaths, which is precisely why his soldiers follow him. Beneath the composure sits a personal obsession with uncovering the truth about the world beyond the Walls, an ambition he admits is partly selfish. He is politically shrewd, willing to withhold facts from the government, and able to shoulder public blame without flinching or explaining himself.

Erwin grew up as the son of a schoolteacher inside the Walls. Later canon reveals that his father privately questioned the official history taught to children and was killed for it, a loss that shaped Erwin's lifelong suspicion that humanity has been lied to about its own past. He enlisted, joined the Survey Corps rather than the safer branches, and rose steadily through its ranks on the strength of his planning, eventually becoming its thirteenth commander. Along the way he recruited a violent criminal from the underground city into his corps, gaining in Levi the single most effective soldier alive. By the time the Colossal Titan breaches Wall Maria, Erwin has already accepted that expeditions beyond the Wall will cost enormous numbers of lives.

1. Return of the Scouts and the Fall of Shiganshina

   Erwin leads the Survey Corps back through the gate after another costly failure, absorbing public contempt without defending himself. The scene establishes both the corps' terrible casualty rate and the commander's refusal to justify it, setting up the political weakness he must overcome once a Titan-shifter appears.

2. Eren's Military Tribunal

   Erwin petitions for custody of Eren against the Military Police, who want the boy dissected. He argues that Eren is a weapon capable of retaking Wall Maria and allows Levi to demonstrate control through violence. Winning the court battle gives the Survey Corps both Eren and a mandate for a new expedition.

3. 57th Exterior Scouting Mission

   Erwin deploys the long-distance enemy scouting formation, a signal-flare network designed to move a large column around Titans rather than through them. When the Female Titan carves through his ranks he reveals that the true objective is trapping the intelligent enemy, and he orders the advance to continue despite mounting losses.

4. Aftermath and the Stohess Operation

   Having concluded that the enemy is hiding among his own soldiers, Erwin backs Armin's theory identifying the Female Titan's likely host and authorizes a capture operation inside the interior district. He accepts that success will mean enormous civilian damage and official blame, and he faces the consequences without shifting responsibility.

Erwin brought Levi into the Survey Corps and relies on him as both a weapon and a frank adviser. He accepts Levi's bluntness and trusts him with the corps' most dangerous assignments, including guarding Eren.
