A powerless boy inherits the world's mightiest Quirk - and a hero's burden.
In a society where roughly eighty percent of people are born with superhuman traits called Quirks, professional heroism has become a licensed, celebrated career. Izuku Midoriya idolises the beaming Symbol of Peace, All Might, and fills notebooks with analysis of pro heroes - but he is one of the powerless few. A chance encounter with his idol changes everything, giving Izuku a shot at the elite hero course of U.A. High School. Enrolment is only the beginning: he must master a borrowed power that wrecks his own body, survive brutal training exercises, and prove himself beside gifted classmates, including his volatile childhood tormentor Katsuki Bakugo. When a shadowy organisation targets U.A. directly, the first-years learn how quickly a classroom drill becomes a real fight for survival.
Quirks - inherited superpowers - are ordinary in Izuku Midoriya's world, and heroes are ranked, sponsored public figures. Izuku has no Quirk at all, yet still dreams of attending U.A. High School's famed hero course. After he acts selflessly in a crisis, the nation's greatest hero recognises something in him and offers to pass on a secret power. Izuku must build a body capable of holding it before the entrance exam arrives.
