Who is Eijiro Kirishima?
A loud, good-natured student obsessed with the idea of manliness, who judges everything by whether it is sufficiently brave. His skin hardens into jagged rock-like armour, making him a natural front-line brawler with more endurance than finesse. Quick to praise others and slow to hold grudges, he becomes one of the first classmates to reach past Bakugo's hostility and treat him as a peer.
Appearance
Broad-shouldered and visibly muscular for a first-year, Kirishima keeps his bright red hair spiked upward in stiff points. He has narrow red eyes, a small scar over his right eye, and a wide grin full of unusually sharp teeth. His U.A. uniform is worn loosely with the collar open, and his hero costume is deliberately minimal: a sleeveless top that exposes his chest, baggy black trousers, heavy boots and an eye-catching gear headpiece, chosen so nothing interferes with the jagged stone-like texture his skin takes on when hardened.
Personality
Loud, cheerful and relentlessly enthusiastic, Kirishima is the easiest person in Class 1-A to befriend. He values what he calls manliness above almost anything, meaning courage, loyalty, and standing your ground rather than machismo for its own sake, and he openly admires anyone who fights without backing down. He is quick to compliment others, slow to take offence, and genuinely happy when classmates outperform him. That good nature hides real insecurity about whether his own straightforward Quirk is flashy or strong enough to matter. In a crisis his instinct is to charge forward with someone he trusts at his side rather than wait to be rescued.
Background
Kirishima grew up an ordinary boy with a Quirk that hardens his skin, a power he long considered plain and unimpressive next to the spectacular abilities around him. Hero fandom and a fierce admiration for tough, unflinching professionals shaped his sense of what a hero should be, and the ideal of never retreating became the core of his personal code. Determined to build the body a hero would need, he trained hard enough to pack on serious muscle before entering high school. He sat the standard U.A. entrance examination and earned his place in Class 1-A on his own merits, arriving with more confidence in his spirit than in his Quirk.
Role in My Hero Academia (Season 1)
Entrance Exam and Class 1-A Introduction
Kirishima earns admission through the practical entrance examination and is among the first classmates to strike up conversation, greeting people loudly and openly sizing up their Quirks. He is quick to express admiration for Bakugo's raw power, setting up the friendship that becomes central to his arc.
Quirk Apprehension Test
In Aizawa's assessment his Hardening proves useful for strength events but poorly suited to the speed-based tests, leaving him mid-pack. The result sharpens his private worry that his Quirk is unremarkable, though outwardly he cheers on his classmates and takes his placement in good humour.
Battle Trial
Kirishima competes in All Might's indoor hero-versus-villain exercise and watches the other matches from the monitor room, reacting loudly to the more destructive performances. His commentary highlights how impressed he is by his classmates' firepower and how much he wants to measure up.
U.S.J. Attack
Sent by the warp gate into the ruins zone with Bakugo, Kirishima refuses to hide and tears through the villains alongside him. The pair then ambush Kurogiri and pin his misty body long enough to block the League's escape route, a display of nerve that impresses even Bakugo.
Abilities and techniques
Hardening
He can harden any part of his body, turning his skin into a jagged, rock-like armour that shrugs off blows and cutting attacks. The transformation is instant and he can apply it selectively, hardening only his forearms to block or his fists to strike.
Enhanced Durability
While hardened he absorbs punishment that would incapacitate an ordinary student, letting him wade into melees and act as a shield for others. The armour also turns his strikes into blunt, tearing blows that shred obstacles.
Physical Strength
Years of deliberate training gave him a heavily built frame and considerable raw power even without his Quirk active. He performs well in strength-based events and fights comfortably in close quarters against multiple opponents.
Hardening Limits
His defence is not infinite: sustained impacts eventually crack the hardened surface, and holding the form taxes him. The Quirk also offers no ranged option and does nothing for his speed, which is his weakest attribute in training exercises.
Fearlessness
His defining combat asset is his willingness to close distance with anyone. At the U.S.J. he charges into a villain mob and later grapples a warping opponent, choices that rely far more on nerve than on tactical planning.
Relationships
- Katsuki Bakugo
- Classmate and eventual close friend
- Kirishima admires Bakugo's ferocity from the first day and fights beside him during the villain attack, matching his aggression instead of flinching from it. The shared assault on Kurogiri is the foundation of their later partnership.
- Izuku Midoriya
- Classmate
- He is one of the friendlier faces toward Midoriya early on, complimenting his performance and treating him as an equal rather than a curiosity. His open temperament makes him a natural bridge between the class's factions.
- Mina Ashido
- Classmate
- The two share a similarly loud, upbeat energy and are often grouped together in class reactions and banter during training exercises, forming part of the more boisterous side of Class 1-A.
- Shota Aizawa
- Homeroom teacher
- Aizawa's brutal assessment exposes the gaps in Kirishima's speed and versatility, and the teacher's stand against the villains at the U.S.J. becomes a model of the unyielding courage Kirishima prizes.
Notable moments
- He is one of the first classmates to approach and encourage Midoriya after the entrance results.
- He openly praises Bakugo's power in front of the class, marking the start of their friendship.
- He charges into a crowd of villains at the U.S.J. rather than looking for a place to hide.
- He and Bakugo corner Kurogiri and physically restrain him, cutting off the villains' escape.
Trivia
- His hero costume deliberately leaves his chest and arms bare so his hardened skin is clearly visible.
- He has notably sharp teeth, which stay pointed even when his Quirk is inactive.
- A small scar sits above his right eye.
- He repeatedly praises actions he considers manly, which becomes his verbal trademark.
