Izuku Midoriya

A compulsively analytical boy born without a Quirk in a world where superpowers are ordinary. His obsessive notebooks on professional heroes hide a simple wish: to save people with a smile, as his idol does. After proving his courage, he inherits a borrowed power his body can barely contain, and much of the season follows him breaking his own bones while learning to wield it responsibly.

A small, slightly built teenager with unruly dark green hair that curls in thick tufts, wide green eyes and a scattering of freckles across both cheeks. He is short for his age and noticeably skinny at first, though ten months of brutal conditioning give him a compact, hard-earned muscle tone by the entrance exam. In class he wears U.A.'s dark gakuran with a red tie, usually with the collar neat and a notebook tucked nearby. His hero costume is a green jumpsuit with a hooded mask shaped like long rabbit ears, a red utility belt, elbow and knee guards and bright red boots.

Anxious, soft-spoken and prone to muttering long streams of analysis under his breath, Izuku is an obsessive hero fan who has filled notebooks with observations on professionals and their Quirks. Years of bullying left him self-doubting and quick to apologise, yet his defining trait is that his body moves before his fear does: he throws himself at danger to protect someone else without any plan for his own survival. He cries easily and openly, which he treats as ordinary rather than shameful. Beneath the timidity sits a stubborn, almost reckless resolve and a strategist's mind that constantly looks for the angle a stronger fighter would overlook.

Izuku grew up in a world where roughly eighty percent of people manifest a superpower called a Quirk, and idolised the world's greatest hero from early childhood. A doctor's examination revealed he would never develop a Quirk of his own, a verdict that shaped his entire adolescence: he was mocked as powerless, kept chasing hero videos and data anyway, and drifted apart from the childhood friend who had become the strongest boy in their class. Raised by his supportive but worried mother, Inko, he entered his final year of middle school still insisting he would apply to U.A. High's hero course despite having nothing to show at the practical exam.

1. Entrance Exam Arc

   A sludge villain's attack brings Izuku face to face with the hero he worships, who reveals a hidden frailty and initially tells him a Quirkless boy cannot be a hero. When Izuku charges in to save his childhood friend from the same villain, that courage changes the hero's mind, and he is offered an inheritance of power plus ten months of gruelling training before the U.A. exam.

2. Quirk Apprehension Test Arc

   On his first real school day, the class is put through a physical assessment with expulsion threatened for last place. Unable to control his borrowed strength, Izuku saves his score by channelling power into a single fingertip during the softball throw, breaking the finger but proving he can think his way around a body that cannot yet handle what it holds.

3. Battle Trial Arc

   Paired with Ochaco Uraraka for indoor combat training, he faces his childhood rival, who attacks with genuine fury. Izuku absorbs punishment, uses the building's layout and a wrecked finger to redirect a massive blast through the ceiling, and hands his partner the win at the cost of his own body being carried out unconscious.

4. U.S.J. Arc

   A villain alliance invades a rescue training facility and teleports the class into separate zones. Izuku is dropped into flooded terrain, coordinates an escape with Tsuyu and Mineta, then returns to shore and attacks the brain-like Nomu to buy time for his teacher, ultimately witnessing his mentor pushed to a limit the boy had never imagined possible.

Mentor and idol

The hero who once dismissed his dream then chose him as successor. Their bond mixes reverence with genuine affection; All Might trains him, hides his own decline from him, and calls him a worthy inheritor.

Katsuki Bakugo

Childhood friend and rival

They grew up together before Bakugo's contempt hardened into bullying. Izuku still admires his explosive talent, and his sudden acquisition of power turns their history into open hostility on Bakugo's side.

Ochaco Uraraka

Classmate and friend

The first person at U.A. to treat him kindly, saving him from falling at the exam gate. She partners with him in the battle trial and is one of the few who reads his nickname as something hopeful.

Inko Midoriya

Mother

A worried, loving single parent who apologised to her son when his Quirklessness was confirmed instead of encouraging him, and who weeps with pride when he is accepted into U.A.'s hero course.

• He runs unarmed at a sludge villain to save his childhood tormentor, an act of instinct that convinces the world's top hero to name a successor.
• He shatters his own arm and legs to destroy a zero-point robot and rescue a stranger during the U.A. practical exam, scoring nothing on points but everything on rescue.
• He breaks a finger to launch a single-fingered air blast during the Quirk assessment test, saving himself from expulsion.
• He blows the roof off a training building to hand Ochaco Uraraka an opening and win the battle trial while unconscious.
• He hurls himself at the artificial Nomu at the U.S.J. to protect his teacher and classmates.

• His nickname comes from an alternate reading of the characters in his given name, used mockingly by Bakugo and reclaimed as a hero name after a classmate says it sounds encouraging.
• He keeps a series of notebooks titled for future hero analysis, one of which is thrown out a window in the first episode.
• His hero costume was designed by his mother based on the sketches in his notebooks, including the distinctive long-eared hood.
