Who is Ochaco Uraraka?

A warm, practical girl from a struggling construction family who wants a hero licence chiefly so she can support her parents financially. She befriends the protagonist at the entrance exam after saving him from a fall, and her gravity-cancelling touch makes her unexpectedly dangerous in battle. Cheerful and unpretentious, she grounds a class full of egos while quietly working out her own combat style.

Appearance

Uraraka is one of the shorter students in Class 1-A, with a soft, rounded face and permanently flushed cheeks she is frequently teased about. Her light brown hair falls in a chin-length bob with two thicker strands framing her face, and her wide brown eyes give her an open, approachable look. At school she wears the standard U.A. uniform with a pleated skirt and dark stockings. Her hero costume is a close-fitting black and pink bodysuit with a bulky rounded collar, a broad utility belt, chunky pink boots and gloves, and a helmet-style headpiece with a pointed visor.

Personality

Warm, cheerful and disarmingly blunt, Uraraka is the first classmate to treat Izuku Midoriya with simple kindness, and she quickly becomes the social glue of Class 1-A. She is easily flustered, prone to bursts of enthusiasm, and embarrassed by attention, yet underneath the sunny manner sits a very practical, almost stubborn determination. Her reason for wanting to be a hero is refreshingly unglamorous and she admits it openly rather than dressing it up in idealism. In a fight she is far more aggressive than her gentle demeanour suggests, willing to take punishment, improvise wildly and gamble everything on one decisive move. She is also quick to praise others and slow to resent anyone, including opponents who hurt her.

Background

Uraraka grew up in a rural part of Japan in a modest, tight-knit family whose small construction business has long struggled for contracts. She realised early that her Quirk could make her father's work vastly cheaper and easier, but her parents refused to let her carry their burden and told her to chase her own dreams instead. She decided that the fastest way to give them an easy life was to earn a professional hero's salary, so she studied hard and sat the U.A. entrance examination. During the practical test she scored well but spent points of her own goodwill helping others, and she pleaded with an examiner to transfer her rescue points to the boy who had saved her from falling debris.

Role in My Hero Academia (Season 1)

  1. Entrance Exam arc

She stops Izuku from tripping before the practical exam and is the first person at U.A. to speak to him kindly. During the test she racks up villain points until the zero-pointer's rampage pins her under rubble, and Izuku destroys the robot to save her. Afterwards she begs the staff to give him some of her rescue points.

  2. Quirk Apprehension Test

Introduced to Aizawa's threat of expulsion for whoever finishes last, she takes the softball throw and floats the ball entirely, producing an unmeasurable result that stuns the class. Her carefree scores mask the fact that heavy Quirk use leaves her nauseated, a limit that quietly defines how she has to fight.

  3. Battle Trial arc

Paired with Izuku as the infiltrating heroes against Bakugo and Iida, she is thrown around by Bakugo before slipping past to Iida on the upper floor. She survives his defensive charge, floats a mountain of loose debris into a crushing meteor storm as cover, and touches the fake weapon to win the exercise.

  4. U.S.J. arc

Caught at the entrance when the villains warp the class across the facility, she stays with Thirteen and the remaining students. When Kurogiri moves to stop Iida from fetching help, she grabs the metal brace at his neck and hurls him away using her Quirk, buying the seconds that let Iida escape the building.

Abilities and techniques

Zero Gravity

Touching an object with all five fingertips of one hand cancels its weight entirely, letting it float until she presses her fingertips together to release it. She can apply it to herself, to allies and to large volumes of rubble at once.

Quirk drawback

Floating too much mass, or holding it too long, triggers severe nausea and dizziness that can incapacitate her. Managing this limit forces her to plan engagements around a single decisive application rather than sustained use.

Improvised battlefield control

She treats loose debris, equipment and even her own body as ammunition, floating and dropping material to blind, crush or redirect opponents. At the U.S.J. she uses the same trick on a villain, turning an enemy's own weight against him.

Physical toughness

Despite her small frame she absorbs heavy punishment from Bakugo's explosions and keeps moving, showing the pain tolerance and grit that make her one of the class's more reliable close-range fighters.

Hero costume

Her suit's bulky collar, wrist guards and thick boots are designed to cushion impacts and anchor her when she floats herself, while the visor helps her judge distance during freefall and mid-air manoeuvres.

Relationships

Izuku Midoriya
Classmate and close friend
She befriends him before the entrance exam and he saves her life during it, a debt she repays by transferring her points. They become partners in the battle trial, where she trusts his plan completely despite his obvious nerves.
Tenya Iida
Classmate and friend
Their first real interaction is as opponents in the battle trial, where she defeats him with sheer improvisation. Outside of training she treats his rigid formality with affectionate amusement, and the two form the core of Izuku's small circle.
Katsuki Bakugo
Classmate and rival
He targets her early in the battle trial and hurls her aside without hesitation, but she refuses to stay down. She holds no grudge afterwards and openly acknowledges how dangerous and skilled he is.
Her parents
Family
Their struggling construction business is the reason she entered the hero course. They insist she live for herself rather than for them, which only strengthens her resolve to earn enough to give them an easy life.

Notable moments

  • She asks the entrance exam staff to transfer her rescue points to Izuku after he destroys the zero-pointer to save her.
  • Her softball throw produces no measurable distance because she simply lets the ball float away.
  • She buries Bakugo's team in a floating storm of debris and seizes the fake weapon to win the battle trial.
  • She flings Kurogiri aside by grabbing the metal collar at his throat so Iida can run for help.

Trivia

  • Her hero name combines her surname with the word gravity.
  • She is one of the few classmates who is immediately friendly to Izuku rather than wary of him.
  • Overusing her Quirk makes her violently motion sick, a weakness established in her very first training session.
  • Her motivation for becoming a hero is financial, and she says so without embarrassment when asked.
