Who is Boruto Uzumaki?
The elder child of Seventh Hokage Naruto, Boruto begins the series resenting his father's absence and dismissing the ninja world's traditions as outdated. Talented but impatient, he cheats his way through the Chūnin Exams before the Ōtsutsuki attack forces him to grow up. Marked with the Kārma seal, he inherits a power that threatens to erase him, and dedicates himself to protecting his friends and proving his own way of the ninja.
Appearance
Boruto is a slight, wiry boy with spiky blond hair, a long fringe that hangs beside his face, and bright blue eyes inherited from both parents. Two thin whisker-like marks sit on each cheek, fainter than his father's. His usual outfit is a dark hooded jacket with pale sleeve trim and a red accent, worn over a mesh-backed shirt with short trousers and sandals, plus a forehead protector once he graduates. Later he adds longer sleeves and a black cloak. Two distinct marks define him visually: the diamond-shaped Karma seal on his right palm and the pale, ringed Jougan that occasionally manifests in his right eye.
Personality
Brash, mouthy and impatient, Boruto masks real insecurity behind constant showing off. He resents his father's absence and initially picks fights with the Hokage's legacy rather than the man, yet he is desperate for approval and quietly proud of his family. He looks for shortcuts, once convincing himself that using forbidden gadgets is simply clever, and the shame of being caught becomes a turning point that pushes him toward honest effort. Underneath the swagger he is loyal to an almost reckless degree, throwing himself into danger for friends, strangers and even former enemies. He states that he has no interest in becoming Hokage, preferring to support whoever does, and he hates the idea of anyone being sacrificed for the village.
Background
Born in a peaceful Konohagakure to Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuga, Boruto grew up with comforts his father never had: a house, a sister named Himawari, and a village where children study rather than fight wars. That peace came at a cost, since Naruto's election as Seventh Hokage filled his days with paperwork and crises, leaving shadow clones to attend family events. Boruto's childhood was therefore shaped by an absent father and an endlessly patient mother. He developed strong natural chakra control and talent early, trained informally with Konohamaru Sarutobi, and enrolled in the Ninja Academy alongside the children of his parents' old classmates. His frustration with Naruto had already hardened into open rebellion by the time his own story begins.
Role in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Academy Entrance Arc
Boruto begins as a troublemaking Academy student who defaces the Hokage monument to get Naruto's attention. He befriends the transfer student Mitsuki, clashes and cooperates with Sarada, and investigates a string of chakra-draining attacks on classmates. The case leads to the class representative Sumire and the beast Nue, whom Boruto chooses to save rather than destroy.
Chunin Exams and Momoshiki Arc
Determined to prove himself, Boruto uses a scientific ninja tool to fake multiple techniques and is publicly disqualified by his own father. Moments later Momoshiki and Kinshiki attack and abduct Naruto. Traveling with Sasuke and the Kage, Boruto helps rescue him, lands a father-and-son Rasengan, and is branded with the Karma seal by the dying Momoshiki.
Mitsuki's Disappearance Arc
When Mitsuki leaves the village under suspicious circumstances, Boruto refuses to accept the official verdict of desertion and slips out with Sarada and their classmates to find him. The search leads to the Land of Earth, artificial humans and a coup engineered by Ku, and ends with Boruto reaffirming that friendship, not orders, defines his loyalty.
Kara Actuation and Kawaki Arc
The organization Kara hunts a runaway vessel, and Boruto's family takes in the wounded, hostile Kawaki. Discovering that they share the Karma seal, Boruto slowly wears down Kawaki's distrust while surviving assaults by Delta and Boro. His own seal grows stronger and more dangerous, granting terrifying power at the cost of Momoshiki's growing influence.
Vessel and Isshiki Conflict
Boruto is drawn into the confrontation with Jigen and the Otsutsuki Isshiki, transported to another dimension and forced to rely on Naruto and Sasuke. As the battle turns desperate, Momoshiki seizes control of his body, and the aftermath leaves Boruto burdened by what his possessed self did to the people closest to him.
Abilities and techniques
Karma Seal
A diamond-shaped mark on his right palm left by Momoshiki. It absorbs and redirects ninjutsu, restores his body at unnatural speed and grants enormous power in stages, but each activation advances Momoshiki's claim over him and can lead to full possession.
Jougan
A mysterious dojutsu that awakens in his right eye without warning. It reveals chakra pathways, exposes dimensional rifts and weak points invisible to other eyes, and reacts to Otsutsuki-related threats. Boruto cannot yet summon or control it deliberately.
Rasengan and variants
Taught by Konohamaru, Boruto's Rasengan is small but unusually refined. His unconscious lightning affinity makes the sphere vanish from sight mid-flight, producing the Vanishing Rasengan, and he later scales the technique up dramatically with Karma-boosted chakra.
Shadow Clone Technique
Despite his age he can produce multiple solid clones with ease, a trait inherited from his father. He uses them for feints, combination attacks and training shortcuts, though his stamina limits how long large numbers can be maintained.
Multiple nature transformations
Boruto possesses wind, lightning and water affinities, an unusually broad range for a genin. He combines simple elemental attacks with sword training from Sasuke's tutelage and with precise chakra control that lets him win fights through timing rather than raw power.
Scientific ninja tools
Early on he relies on the Kote, a gauntlet that stores and fires prepared jutsu scrolls. The device wins him fights he has not earned, and his public exposure ends the phase, though it leaves him unusually knowledgeable about the technology.
Relationships
- Naruto Uzumaki
- Father
- The central tension of his life. Boruto begins by resenting the Hokage who never comes home, but shared battles and Naruto's willingness to sacrifice himself gradually turn contempt into fierce, protective admiration.
- Sasuke Uchiha
- Mentor
- Boruto asks Sasuke to train him specifically because Sasuke is his father's rival. The two develop a blunt, practical bond, with Sasuke teaching him swordsmanship and lightning techniques while warning him about the Karma seal.
- Sarada Uchiha
- Teammate
- They bicker constantly, yet Boruto openly declares that he will back her ambition to become Hokage. She acts as his conscience, calling out his shortcuts and refusing to let him carry burdens alone.
- Mitsuki
- Best friend
- Mitsuki attaches himself to Boruto immediately, describing him in terms of sunlight. Boruto accepts him without caring about his artificial origins, and repeatedly defies orders and logic to bring him back.
- Kawaki
- Adoptive brother
- First an enemy vessel, then a reluctant houseguest, Kawaki becomes the brother Boruto never had. Their shared Karma seals bind them together even as their differing views on Naruto's safety drive them apart.
Notable moments
- He vandalizes the Hokage monument on the day of the Academy entrance ceremony purely to force his father to look at him.
- His use of a prohibited ninja tool during the Chunin Exams finals is exposed by Naruto, who strips him of his contestant status in front of the entire arena.
- He forms a combined Rasengan with his father to strike down Momoshiki Otsutsuki.
- He receives the Karma seal from the dying Momoshiki, unaware of what the mark means.
- He chooses to shelter Kawaki rather than treat him as a weapon, setting the Kara conflict on a personal footing.
Trivia
- His name is commonly read as a play on the word bolt, continuing a family naming pattern connected to his uncle Neji.
- He is the first of the new generation to be disqualified from a Chunin Exam by the Hokage himself.
- He enjoys video games and modern conveniences that did not exist in his father's childhood.
- He repeatedly insists he does not want the Hokage title, an inversion of his father's defining ambition.
