Who is Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki?

An Ōtsutsuki noble who harvests planets for chakra fruit, Momoshiki invades Konoha during the Chūnin Exams and abducts Naruto to consume the Nine-Tails. Defeated by father and son together, he leaves a parting curse: the Kārma seal branded onto Boruto. From within that seal he persists as a mocking presence, steadily eroding Boruto's body and identity in a bid for resurrection.

Appearance

Momoshiki is a slender, pale humanoid far taller than any human around him, with long white hair swept back from a high brow and a pair of small horns. His skin is chalk white and marked with dark patterning, and he possesses a Byakugan alongside ringed Rinnegan eyes, including ones set into his palms. He dresses in flowing ceremonial robes with wide sleeves. When his consciousness surfaces through Boruto, the boy's skin pales, black markings spread across his face and body, a horn pushes from his forehead, and one eye takes on the Otsutsuki's ringed pattern.

Personality

Momoshiki regards every other living thing as livestock, and speaks to shinobi with the lazy boredom of an aristocrat addressing farm animals. He is greedy, impatient and theatrical, preferring to consume power rather than earn it, and he devours chakra the way a glutton devours food. Defeat wounds his pride far more than his body. Inside Boruto he becomes a mocking, intrusive voice, delighting in the boy's fear while also protecting the vessel he intends to inherit, since damage to Boruto is damage to his own future. He is patient in a way his living self never was, willing to wait years for a single opening, and he enjoys reminding Boruto that the countdown is entirely his.

Background

Momoshiki belonged to the Otsutsuki, a clan that travels between worlds planting the divine tree, harvesting the chakra fruit it produces, and discarding the drained planet afterwards. He worked alongside the far larger Kinshiki, whom he treated as both retainer and reserve nourishment, and the pair maintained a well appointed dimension stocked with the spoils of previous conquests. Learning that the chakra of the world Kaguya had abandoned was ripening in a new generation, they came to that planet hunting Naruto Uzumaki, the strongest reservoir available. The story of that invasion, his defeat at the hands of the Seventh Hokage, Sasuke Uchiha and Boruto, and the mark he left behind, is dramatised early in this series.

Role in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

  1. Chunin Exams Arc

Momoshiki and Kinshiki descend on the Hidden Leaf during the finals, tearing through the arena and abducting Naruto for his chakra. Boruto, Sasuke and the assembled Kage pursue them into their dimension, where Momoshiki absorbs Kinshiki to become a monstrous form before being brought down by a combined father and son attack.

  2. Karma awakening

Dying, Momoshiki brands Boruto with Karma and delivers an ominous prophecy about the fate awaiting him. Afterwards he exists only as a dormant consciousness, surfacing in dreams and visions, warning Boruto that his eyes will one day see everything taken from him and that the mark is not a gift.

  3. Kawaki and Kara Clash Arc

As Boruto's Karma activates in battle, Momoshiki's influence grows. During the desperate fight against Boro, he seizes control of Boruto's body to finish the enemy with overwhelming ease, then reminds his terrified friends that the boy they know is being slowly overwritten.

  4. Isshiki's Assault Arc

With the Karma percentage climbing, Momoshiki takes Boruto's body almost completely during the battle against Isshiki, intervening for his own reasons and turning on Kawaki. Sasuke and Kawaki are forced to stop him without killing the vessel, and afterwards nobody can be sure how much of Boruto remains his own.

  5. Code Arc

Momoshiki continues to whisper from within, testing Boruto's willpower whenever the boy is injured or exhausted, and lending stolen power at moments of crisis. His presence becomes the central fear shaping how Konoha, Kawaki and Boruto himself plan for the future.

Abilities and techniques

Rinnegan absorption

The ringed eyes in his palms and face absorb incoming ninjutsu, storing the chakra for later release. He can return an attack magnified many times over, which makes conventional jutsu barrages actively dangerous to the people who use them.

Chakra fruit consumption

By condensing harvested chakra into fruit or pills and consuming them, Momoshiki multiplies his own power in an instant. This is how he transformed after devouring Kinshiki, trading form and dignity for raw destructive scale.

Karma

The seal he carved into Boruto stores his biological data and gradually rewrites the host toward becoming a new Momoshiki. It grants the vessel enormous regeneration and power while advancing the Otsutsuki's own resurrection.

Vessel possession

When the Karma is sufficiently active, Momoshiki can surface in Boruto's body, altering its appearance and wielding abilities far beyond a genin's. Control ranges from brief interruptions to near total takeover during extreme stress.

Byakugan and elemental release

His Byakugan grants extended perception, while stored chakra can be discharged as wind, fire, lightning and other releases, often shaped into enormous spheres or blades that flatten terrain in a single strike.

Foresight and manipulation

From within the seal he shows Boruto visions of possible futures and sows doubt at calculated moments, using knowledge as a weapon when he cannot use his hands.

Relationships

Boruto Uzumaki
Vessel
Momoshiki treats Boruto as a house he intends to move into, alternately tormenting and preserving him. Their arguments inside the seal form one of the series' longest running conflicts of will.
Kinshiki Otsutsuki
Partner and retainer
Kinshiki served him loyally and offered himself as nourishment when the fight turned. Momoshiki accepted without hesitation, revealing exactly how his clan values companionship against power.
Naruto Uzumaki
Target and opponent
He came to this world specifically for Naruto's chakra, and his defeat by the Seventh Hokage and his son is the humiliation that shapes everything he says afterwards from inside the seal.
Kawaki
Rival vessel
Momoshiki views the boy carrying Isshiki's mark as competition and as a threat to his own resurrection, and acts violently against him when given control of Boruto's body.
Sasuke Uchiha
Adversary
Sasuke fought him in his own dimension and later becomes the person watching Boruto most closely for signs of him, making the Uchiha both an old enemy and a permanent obstacle.

Notable moments

  • He and Kinshiki crash into the Chunin Exam finals and drag Naruto away before the assembled Kage can stop them.
  • He absorbs Kinshiki to assume a grotesque enlarged form during the battle in his dimension.
  • He brands Boruto with Karma as he dies and foretells a future in which the boy loses everything.
  • He takes over Boruto's body to destroy Boro when the young shinobi are outmatched.
  • He seizes near total control during the confrontation with Isshiki and turns his power on Kawaki.

Trivia

  • His name and that of his partner reference traditional Japanese fruit imagery, fitting for a character obsessed with harvesting chakra fruit.
  • Unlike most Otsutsuki shown in the series, he relies heavily on consuming power rather than cultivating his own.
  • His debut in this series is an expanded retelling of events first presented in the Boruto film.
  • He is voiced in Japanese by Daisuke Namikawa and in English by Xander Mobus.
  • His Karma mark is drawn as a stylised diamond pattern on Boruto's right palm.
