Who is Sasuke Uchiha?

Konoha's shadow-side counterpart to the Hokage, Sasuke spends years travelling other dimensions investigating the Ōtsutsuki threat. He takes Boruto as his apprentice, seeing in him both promise and danger, while his long absences leave Sarada aching for a father she barely knows. Stoic and blunt, he offers Boruto the guidance Naruto cannot, and pays dearly for standing between his students and Isshiki's plans.

Appearance

Sasuke is lean and travel-worn, with black hair grown long enough that heavy bangs hang over the left side of his face, concealing his Rinnegan. He wears a dark, tattered poncho-style cloak over a black high-collared outfit and trousers, with a sword at his hip and his left sleeve hanging empty where his arm was lost. His remaining eye is dark and level, and his expression rarely shifts. After the loss of his Rinnegan he keeps the damaged eye hidden, and his posture carries the stiffness of a man who has stopped healing quickly.

Personality

Sasuke is terse, self-contained and entirely without sentiment in his manner, communicating in short statements and letting results speak for him. He has traded ambition for penance, viewing his roving surveillance of Otsutsuki threats as atonement he owes rather than duty he chose. As a teacher he is demanding and unsparing, refusing to flatter Boruto and pushing him toward independence rather than imitation of his father. Beneath the coldness is genuine care: he worries about his daughter's safety, respects Naruto without ever saying so, and takes responsibility for the consequences of his own power. He is pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness when weighing a single life against a wider catastrophe.

Background

The last surviving heir of the Uchiha clan after his brother destroyed it, Sasuke spent his youth pursuing revenge, defecting from Konoha and nearly severing his bond with Naruto. Their final battle cost him an arm and ended in reconciliation. In the years of peace that followed he chose exile of a kind, wandering the world to investigate the remains of ancient threats, Kaguya's dimensions and the Otsutsuki clan. He married Sakura Haruno and fathered Sarada, though his mission kept him away for most of her childhood. Naruto relies on him as an unofficial second Kage who operates beyond the village's borders, and by this series he has begun taking students of his own.

Role in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

  1. Return to Konoha and Boruto's Apprenticeship

Sasuke returns home with warnings about the Otsutsuki and accepts Boruto as a student on the condition that the boy commits fully. He teaches him shuriken technique and discipline rather than his father's methods, and his blunt honesty gives Boruto something Naruto's busy warmth cannot.

  2. Chunin Exams and Momoshiki Arc

When Momoshiki and Kinshiki abduct Naruto, Sasuke opens a path between dimensions with his Rinnegan and leads Boruto and the Kage on the rescue. He fights the Otsutsuki alongside Naruto in their old formation and afterwards recognises the Karma mark that appears on Boruto's palm.

  3. Kara Actuation Arc

Investigating Kara's ruins and the Vessel, Sasuke confronts Kashin Koji and later joins Naruto against Jigen. The pair are decisively outclassed; Sasuke exhausts his Rinnegan teleporting them away, is badly wounded, and can only watch Naruto be sealed into another dimension.

  4. Isshiki Otsutsuki Arc

Sasuke helps mount the rescue that frees Naruto and fights Isshiki at his limit. In the aftermath, with Boruto's body seized by Momoshiki, Sasuke is unable to defend himself and his Rinnegan is destroyed, permanently stripping him of space-time travel and his most valuable strategic asset.

  5. Sasuke Retsuden

In an adapted side story, Sasuke and Sakura travel to the distant Land of Redaku seeking a cure connected to Naruto's condition. Posing as a couple in an unfamiliar society, Sasuke works largely without ninjutsu, relying on deduction and Sakura's medical expertise while old accusations about his past resurface.

Abilities and techniques

Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan

His right eye perceives chakra flow, predicts movement and casts powerful genjutsu. The Mangekyo grants the black flames of Amaterasu and the manipulation of their shape, alongside the armoured chakra avatar Susanoo for both offence and defence.

Rinnegan

Housed in his left eye until its destruction, granting Amenotejikara, which instantly swaps his position with an object or person, and the ability to open portals between dimensions. Its loss removes Konoha's only reliable means of interdimensional travel.

Chidori and Lightning Release

A concentrated lightning thrust delivered through his hand or channelled along his blade, capable of piercing most defences. He also generates wide-area lightning barrages and uses the technique's speed to close distance in an instant.

Kenjutsu

Fighting one-handed, Sasuke wields a straight sword with economical precision, frequently channelling lightning chakra through the blade. His swordsmanship compensates for his missing arm and forms the core of his teaching for close-quarters students.

Intelligence and Tracking

Years alone in the field have made him an exceptional investigator, reading ruins, ciphers and enemy movements to anticipate threats long before Konoha's official channels do. Much of what the village knows about Kara originates in his reports.

Six Paths Chakra

The power granted by Hagoromo enhances his techniques and allows him to work in tandem with Naruto against opponents far beyond ordinary shinobi, though its usefulness is severely reduced once his Rinnegan is gone.

Relationships

Boruto Uzumaki
Student
Sasuke trains him with cold honesty rather than praise, becoming the mentor figure Boruto needs precisely because he is not Naruto. He watches the boy's Karma with growing unease and personal responsibility.
Naruto Uzumaki
Closest friend and partner
They fight as a single unit with almost no communication needed. Sasuke serves as Naruto's outside agent by choice, considering the role his atonement, and neither man voices the depth of the bond.
Sarada Uchiha
Daughter
His long absences left her uncertain of his affection, and their relationship is repaired slowly through brief visits and shared missions. He quietly supports her ambition to become Hokage.
Sakura Uchiha
Wife
She accepts his wandering without resentment and proves an equal partner in the field, her medical skill covering the gaps his solitary methods leave open during their journey to Redaku.
Kashin Koji
Adversary
The Kara inner member's frog-based techniques and familiar style unsettle Sasuke during their encounter, and the mystery of the man's origins feeds directly into his investigation of Jigen.

Notable moments

  • He agrees to take Boruto as his student only after the boy proves he is serious about the commitment.
  • He opens the dimensional path that allows the Kage and Boruto to rescue Naruto from Momoshiki.
  • He is overwhelmed alongside Naruto by Jigen and forced to flee, unable to prevent Naruto's sealing.
  • He loses his Rinnegan when Momoshiki, controlling Boruto's body, strikes him down.
  • He travels with Sakura to the Land of Redaku on a mission that depends on investigation rather than power.

Trivia

  • His left sleeve hangs empty because he never accepted a prosthetic arm after his final battle with Naruto.
  • He habitually hides his Rinnegan behind his bangs to avoid drawing attention while travelling.
  • Naruto's advisers informally regard him as a second Kage operating outside the village.
  • The Sasuke Retsuden storyline adapts a spin-off novel and places him in a setting where ninjutsu is unfamiliar.
  • He is voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama in Japanese and Yuri Lowenthal in English, as in every previous Naruto anime.
