Who is Gauche Adlai?
A former convict recruited by Yami, Gauche is antisocial, sharp-tongued and utterly consumed by love for his younger sister Marie, whom he will defend with alarming intensity. He initially resents his squadmates and works alone, but repeated battles alongside the Black Bulls wear down his hostility until he quietly counts them as family. His mirror magic makes him one of the squad's most adaptable attackers.
Appearance
Gauche is a tall, wiry young man with unruly dark blue-black hair that falls over his forehead and frames a gaunt face. His pale violet eyes are ringed with heavy shadows that give him a permanently unhinged look, sharpened by a small mark beneath one eye. He wears the Black Bulls' tattered black robe over dark, close-fitting clothes, and he carries mirrors constantly, from hand mirrors tucked away for emergencies to fragments worn on his person. In battle, mirrored panels and reflected light surround him, and his expression swings between bored disdain and gleeful mania.
Personality
Gauche is abrasive, antisocial and openly hostile to nearly everyone, insisting he has no interest in comrades and only stays in the squad because it suits him. All of that collapses the moment his little sister Marie is mentioned: he becomes a rhapsodic, doting fanatic whose entire value system revolves around her happiness, to a degree the rest of the Black Bulls find alarming. He is violent, holds grudges, and reacts to insults with immediate force. Yet he is not actually heartless; exposure to Asta's stubborn decency gradually pulls him into caring about the squad, and he will put himself in mortal danger for people he claims to despise. His loyalty, once given, is absolute.
Background
Gauche grew up poor with his younger sister Marie and no family to protect them, an upbringing that left him with a fierce, obsessive devotion to her wellbeing and little regard for laws or other people. His crimes landed him in prison, where he expected to rot until Yami Sukehiro, the captain of the Black Bulls, recruited him directly from his cell. The Black Bulls accept outcasts no other squad wants, which made it the only place that would take a convicted criminal with a violent temper. Marie was placed in the care of a church in the town of Nairn, and Gauche's life since has revolved around earning money and status for her sake while keeping his distance from everyone else.
Role in Black Clover
Introduction and the attack on Nairn
Gauche returns to the Black Bulls hideout and immediately clashes with Asta, dismissing the newcomer with contempt. When criminals connected to the Eye of the Midnight Sun raid the church where Marie lives, Asta fights to protect her without hesitation, and Gauche's opinion of him permanently changes.
Underwater Temple
He joins the mission into the Seabed Temple and ends up facing one of the Third Eye's strongest members. Massively outmatched, he uses his reflective magic to buy time and absorb punishment for his comrades, and the battle leaves him gravely wounded but marks his real acceptance of the squad.
Royal Knights Selection Exam
Gauche takes part in the tournament to select an elite unit, fighting with his usual flamboyant mirror techniques and refusal to cooperate with anyone he does not like. The exam showcases how much sharper his combat instincts have become since joining the Black Bulls.
Elf Reincarnation
An elf spirit seizes his body, and worse, Marie is possessed by that elf's own sister, forcing the pair into battle against his comrades. The fight is personal on every level, and it takes Asta's anti-magic to sever the possession and return both siblings to themselves.
Spade Kingdom preparations
With devils and the Dark Triad threatening the kingdom, Gauche trains alongside the rest of the Black Bulls to refine his magic and unify his mana. He develops new reflective applications and takes his place in the squad's assault force, no longer pretending he is fighting only for himself.
Abilities and techniques
Mirror Magic
Gauche's grimoire lets him create mirrors of any size from stored fragments or ambient mana, using them for defense, reflection, surveillance and offense. The versatility of the attribute makes him effective against both spell users and physical attackers.
Reflect Ray
He condenses light through his mirrors into piercing beams that can be bounced between multiple surfaces, striking from impossible angles. Skilled placement lets him hit enemies who have taken cover or who are watching the wrong direction entirely.
Mirrors Brigade
By arranging numerous mirrors around a target he produces a swarm of reflected images that attack simultaneously, overwhelming opponents who cannot distinguish the real threat from the duplicates. It is his signature crowd-control technique.
Real Double
A more advanced application that creates a tangible mirror copy of a person, able to act independently for a time. Gauche uses it for ambushes, decoys and to let allies be in two places at once.
Reflection defense
His mirrors can turn incoming spells back at their caster, making him dangerous to attack with concentrated magic. Against sufficiently powerful foes the strain shatters his mirrors and injures him, but the technique has saved his squad repeatedly.
Relationships
- Marie Adlai
- Younger sister
- The center of Gauche's entire existence. He showers her with obsessive affection and will attack anyone who threatens her, while Marie herself finds his intensity exhausting and wishes he would care about other people too.
- Asta
- Squadmate
- Gauche despises him on sight but is won over when Asta risks his life for Marie. Their relationship remains prickly, with Gauche insulting him constantly while quietly treating him as someone worth fighting beside.
- Yami Sukehiro
- Squad captain
- Yami pulled him out of prison and gave him a place among other outcasts, earning a loyalty Gauche rarely admits to. He obeys Yami's orders even when he refuses to cooperate with anyone else.
- Grey
- Squadmate
- The timid transformation mage harbors clear feelings for Gauche, which he is entirely oblivious to given his fixation on Marie. Their dynamic supplies much of the Black Bulls' comic byplay.
Notable moments
- He is recruited into the Black Bulls straight from a prison cell by Yami Sukehiro.
- His hostility toward Asta breaks down after Asta protects Marie during the attack on the church at Nairn.
- He takes devastating punishment shielding his comrades during the Underwater Temple battle.

Trivia

- His extreme sister complex is one of the series' longest-running running gags.
- He is one of several Black Bulls recruited because no other squad would accept them.
- His magic can serve reconnaissance and communication roles as well as combat.
