Who is Patry?
The masked leader of the terrorist group the Eye of the Midnight Sun, Patry orchestrates the theft of magic stones in order to resurrect his slaughtered elven kin. Convinced that humans massacred his people, he wields brilliant light magic and reincarnation spells that place elf souls into human bodies. His grief, and his misplaced faith in a false friend, drive the series' central conflict toward the Tree of Qliphoth.
Appearance
In public Patry is a faceless silhouette: a broad horned mask, a high collar and a dark hooded robe marked with his organization's eye motif, which lets him pass for the long-dead elf hero he impersonates. Unmasked he is slim and pale, with long light-colored hair, the long pointed ears of an elf and delicate, almost sorrowful features. Once reincarnation is complete, elven sigils surface on his brow and his eyes take on the cold, glassy shine common to the revived elves, while light magic wraps him in feathered wings of radiance.
Personality
Patry presents himself as a serene prophet, but the calm is a shell over five centuries of grief. He is courteous, soft-spoken and capable of real tenderness toward the elves who follow him, treating the Third Eye as family rather than soldiers, yet he speaks of humans as a species to be erased and feels no guilt over the lives his plans cost. He is also, fatally, a believer: he clings to a version of the past he was handed and refuses evidence that complicates it. That credulity makes him easy to steer. When the truth finally reaches him, his fanaticism collapses into shame, and he becomes as desperate to repair the damage as he once was to cause it.
Background
Patry was an elf of the village that lived in what would become the Clover Kingdom, and the closest friend of Licht, the leader whose optimism about coexisting with humans he shared. That hope ended on the day of Licht's wedding to the human noblewoman Tetia, when the elves were slaughtered in an attack Patry believed had been led by Lumiere, the first Wizard King. Licht cast a forbidden reincarnation spell to preserve his people's souls before losing himself to demonic power. Patry died with hatred intact, and five hundred years later his soul awoke inside a scarred human boy named William Vangeance, sharing the body that would rise to captain the Golden Dawn.
Role in Black Clover
Emergence of the Eye of the Midnight Sun
Hidden behind mask and alias, Patry directs raids for the magic stones needed to restore his people, dispatching the Third Eye and lesser mages while remaining a rumor to the Magic Knights. His quiet appearances after each operation establish him as the intelligence behind attacks that the kingdom treats as isolated terrorism rather than a single ritual.
Attack on the Royal Capital
He strikes the capital personally, using light magic at speed no defender can track, and leaves Fuegoleon Vermillion gravely wounded before securing another stone. The assault forces the Magic Knights to accept that the organization's leader is a mage of a different order entirely, and prompts the formation of a hand-picked strike force to hunt him.
Royal Knights and the death of the Wizard King
When the Royal Knights storm his base, the trail leads back to the Golden Dawn and exposes Patry as the second soul inside William Vangeance. Confronted by Julius Novachrono, he takes the final stone and strikes the Wizard King down, then triggers the mass reincarnation that replaces Clover Kingdom mages with revived elves.
Elf Reincarnation and the Shadow Palace
Leading his restored people from the Shadow Palace, Patry gathers the stones' power for a spell meant to end humanity, and battles Asta and Yuno at the summit of his strength. The demon Zagred's betrayal reveals that the massacre he avenged was engineered, and Patry turns on his manipulator, fighting beside the humans he hunted.
Aftermath and atonement
With the elves' souls released and finally at peace, Patry is left alive inside William's body, spared execution and bound to a life of penance instead. He carries the guilt of Julius's death and the ruin his crusade caused, and the sealing magic and goodwill that saved him leave him quietly indebted to Asta.
Abilities and techniques
Mirror Magic
His native magic conjures reflective planes that bounce incoming spells back at their casters, redirect attacks around a battlefield and duplicate his own offense. Layered mirrors let him strike from impossible angles, making him nearly impossible to corner in open combat.
Light Magic
Using the four-leaf grimoire of his dead friend Licht, Patry attacks with spears, blades and beams of light that travel almost too fast to perceive. It is the ability that sells his impersonation and the one that fells some of the kingdom's strongest knights.
Magic stone empowerment
Absorbing the ancient magic stones swells his mana to monstrous levels, wreathing him in wings of light and letting him aim spells capable of scouring entire regions. The stones also fuel the mass reincarnation ritual that restores the elf tribe.
Elven mana and sensing
As a reincarnated elf he holds a reserve and mana sensitivity far beyond ordinary humans, tracking distant magic signatures and recovering from wounds that would end a human mage's fight.
Command and misdirection
His greatest weapon is organization: a masked identity, cells of expendable human mages, and loyal lieutenants in the Third Eye allow him to operate inside the kingdom for years while holding a Magic Knight captaincy through his host body.
Relationships
- Licht
- Closest friend and the leader he impersonates
- Patry idolized Licht's belief in peace with humans and took his name, sword and grimoire after the massacre. Meeting him again forces Patry to face how far he strayed from what his friend actually wanted.
- William Vangeance
- Human host and other self
- The two souls share one body and once shared a genuine bond, William offering companionship to a wounded spirit. That intimacy makes William complicit in the conspiracy and leaves both men answering for it afterward.
- Zagred
- Manipulator
- The demon who engineered the elves' slaughter posed as an ally for centuries, feeding Patry the lie that humans were to blame so that the reincarnation ritual would open a path for him into the world.
- The Third Eye
- Lieutenants and surrogate family
- Rhya, Vetto and Fana serve as his elite and his emotional anchor; their deaths and revivals matter more to him than any strategic setback, and his affection for them is the most human thing about him.
- Asta
- Enemy turned unlikely savior
- The boy carrying Licht's swords repeatedly disrupts his plans, then uses anti-magic to free the elves rather than destroy them, giving Patry a chance at a life he never expected to have.
Notable moments
- His masked assault on the royal capital leaves a Magic Knight captain broken and the kingdom without answers.
- The unmasking reveals that the Golden Dawn's celebrated captain has been sharing his body with the enemy the whole time.
- He strikes down Julius Novachrono and sets the mass reincarnation of the elf tribe in motion.
- Learning that a demon, not humanity, destroyed his people shatters five hundred years of conviction in a single moment.
- He fights alongside the Magic Knights against Zagred and survives to live under the weight of what he did.
Trivia
- His alias is so thorough that most characters spend the series believing they are fighting a five-hundred-year-old hero.
- Different English releases render his name as Patry or Patolli.
- The swords Asta wields come from the grimoire Patry carried, tying the two characters together long before they meet.
- Mirror Magic makes him one of the few antagonists whose defense is simply returning an opponent's strongest attack.
- He is one of the rare Black Clover villains who ends the story alive and seeking atonement rather than defeated and dead.
