Who is Secre Swallowtail?
A soft-spoken sorceress from the age of the first Wizard King, Secre sealed herself in the form of a small bird to guard the five-leaf grimoire and the truth about Lemiel Silvamillion Clover, the friend she was branded a traitor for saving. Reawakened and taken in by the Black Bulls as "Nero," she serves as the squad's living archive, guiding Asta toward the anti-magic he wields and quietly seeking to clear her master's name.
Appearance
For most of the series she is seen as a small, round, comically expressive bird with pale plumage, a tuft on its head and wide black eyes, riding on heads and pecking at Asta. Her true form is a slight, pale young woman with black hair cut short around the face and longer strands framing her cheeks, calm dark eyes and an almost doll-like stillness. She dresses in a high-collared dark outfit of antique cut, suited to a five hundred year old attendant, and later pairs it with the Black Bulls robe, whose bulky shoulders dwarf her narrow frame.
Personality
Quiet, blunt and economical with words, she often answers in a few flat syllables and lets her expression do the rest. Centuries alone left her socially awkward, so affection comes out as pecking, perching or standing stubbornly close rather than as warmth she can articulate. Beneath the deadpan is fierce loyalty: she waited half a millennium out of devotion to one man and a promise she refused to abandon. She is observant, patient and utterly unimpressed by rank or spectacle, which lets her speak frankly to royals and Wizard Kings alike. She carries obvious guilt over the past, yet she is quick to attach herself to people who remind her of the kindness she once served, and she guards them doggedly.
Background
Five hundred years before the story she was a noblewoman who served Prince Lemiel Silvamillion Clover, the man who would become the first Wizard King. Her sealing magic was dismissed as useless by her peers, but Lemiel valued it and treated her as an equal, and she quietly devoted herself to him. She witnessed the massacre of the elves and the tragedy that turned their leader into a monstrous being, and she saw Lemiel give his life to stop it. To keep what remained of him and the sealed evil safe, she used forbidden magic on herself, taking the shape of a small bird so she could stand watch across the centuries. Branded a criminal for that act, she vanished from history as a traitor.
Role in Black Clover
Magic Knights Entrance Exam and early missions
She first appears as the strange little bird that lands on Asta during the entrance exam and refuses to leave, pecking him, stealing food and turning up at the Black Bulls hideout. The squad treats her as a mascot, nicknaming her, while she quietly observes the boy carrying a grimoire she recognizes from her own century.
Eye of the Midnight Sun conflict
Throughout the battles against the terrorist organization she remains at Asta's side in bird form, reacting to magic stones and ancient relics in ways nobody understands. Her interest sharpens as the enemy gathers the stones, since she alone knows what the artifacts were made for and what ritual they were designed to trigger.
Elf Reincarnation Arc
Inside the Shadow Palace she finally sheds the bird form and introduces herself as Secre Swallowtail, using sealing magic to open ways the group cannot force. She explains the truth of the first Wizard King, the elves and the devil behind the tragedy, then supports the final confrontation with her sealing spells and her knowledge of the ritual.
Aftermath and Heart Kingdom training
Pardoned rather than punished for her ancient crime, she accepts an invitation into the Black Bulls and becomes an official squad member. She joins the rebuilt hideout and the training push against the coming threat, assisting with sealing work, offering blunt commentary and slowly adapting to living among noisy, affectionate comrades.
Spade Kingdom Raid Arc
She travels with the Black Bulls into enemy territory, contributing support magic while the squad confronts the Dark Triad. Her sealing and unsealing ability proves valuable against barriers and hostile spellwork, and her long memory of devils and their contracts gives the group context for what they are actually fighting.
Abilities and techniques
Sealing Magic
Her signature attribute lets her bind objects, spells, doors and even people inside magical seals. Because it smothers mana rather than clashing with it, the magic is effective against far stronger opponents, though it was long dismissed as a plain and unglamorous attribute.
Unsealing and seal release
The same magic works in reverse, allowing her to undo locks, wards and bindings created by others. This makes her indispensable for entering ancient sites such as the Shadow Palace, where conventional force and raw mana simply cannot open the way.
Forbidden self-transformation
By turning her own magic on herself she took the shape of a small bird, a forbidden act that preserved her for roughly five centuries. The form let her observe unnoticed, though it stripped her of speech and left her unable to explain anything she had witnessed.
Flight and concealment
In bird form she flies freely and passes as an ordinary animal, letting her trail people, enter guarded places and watch battles at close range. Even after regaining human shape she can still use flight magic to keep pace with her squadmates.
Ancient knowledge
Having lived through the era of the first Wizard King, she recognizes relics, rituals and devil-related phenomena that modern mages cannot identify. Her testimony reframes much of the Clover Kingdom's accepted history and explains the origin of Asta's unusual grimoire.
Relationships
- Lemiel Silvamillion Clover
- Former master
- The first Wizard King treated her sealing magic as valuable when everyone else mocked it, and she gave him unspoken devotion in return. Guarding what remained of him is the sole reason she endured five centuries as a bird.
- Asta
- Comrade she chose to follow
- She attached herself to him from their first meeting because his grimoire and his stubborn kindness recalled the man she served. She expresses this by perching on him and pecking him, and she repeatedly intervenes on his behalf.
- Yami Sukehiro and the Black Bulls
- Squad
- The Bulls fed and tolerated her as an odd mascot for months before learning she was human. Yami accepts her into the squad without fuss, and the noisy household becomes the first real home she has had since her own era.
- Julius Novachrono
- Wizard King who pardoned her
- Rather than enforcing the ancient conviction for forbidden magic, he clears her name and lets her live openly, fascinated by a living witness to the kingdom's founding and by the truth she carries about his predecessor.
Notable moments
- The little bird lands on Asta at the Magic Knights entrance exam and becomes a fixture of the Black Bulls without anyone knowing what it is.
- She drops the bird form inside the Shadow Palace and introduces herself by her true name to a stunned Asta and Noelle.
- She reveals the real history of the first Wizard King, the elves and the devil that manipulated both sides.
- Her sealing magic opens paths and restrains enemies during the climax of the elf crisis.
- She is officially pardoned and pinned with membership in the Black Bulls, gaining a squad after five hundred years alone.
Trivia
- The Black Bulls called her by a nickname for months while believing she was an ordinary bird.
- Her sealing attribute was considered a weak, second-rate magic in her own era.
- She spent roughly five hundred years in animal form without aging.
- She is closely tied to the origin of Asta's five-leaf grimoire.
- The bird form appears in early episodes and opening sequences long before her identity is revealed.
