Leopold Vermillion

The hot-blooded youngest Vermillion sibling, Leopold idolises his brother Fuegoleon and declares Asta his rival on sight, unusually free of the snobbery common to royals. He trains relentlessly to close the gap between himself and the people he admires, throwing himself into every fight with loud enthusiasm. Beneath the bluster lies genuine warmth and a determination to become strong enough that he never has to watch his family fall again.

Leopold is a lean, athletic young man with the dark red skin tone and vivid crimson hair shared by his siblings, worn in short, upswept spikes that suggest a lion's mane. His eyes are a deep reddish purple and usually wide with enthusiasm, and a small mark sits near one of them. He wears the Crimson Lion Kings' robe, a fur-trimmed mantle over a fitted dark tunic and trousers with a broad belt, leaving his arms free for hand-to-hand brawling. Flames habitually curl around his fists when he is excited, which is most of the time.

Loud, hot-blooded and relentlessly earnest, Leopold treats every encounter as a chance to test himself and improve. Where many nobles look down on commoners, he judges people purely by the fight in them, which is why he latches onto Asta as a rival almost instantly and cheerfully shouts about it in public. He idolizes his elder brother Fuegoleon and is terrified of, yet devoted to, his elder sister Mereoleona, whose brutal training he endures without complaint. Underneath the bluster he is insecure about being the least accomplished Vermillion, and much of his drive comes from wanting to stand beside his siblings rather than in their shadow. He is generous with praise and quick to protect civilians.

Leopold is the youngest of the three Vermillion siblings, born into one of the two royal houses of the Clover Kingdom and raised alongside his cousin Mimosa. Growing up between a brother celebrated as a model knight and a sister regarded as a force of nature, he inherited the family's powerful fire magic but spent his childhood measured against impossible standards. He entered the Magic Knights and was placed in the Crimson Lion Kings, the squad his brother captains, where he trained hard but had not yet distinguished himself in battle when the story begins. His family's traditions of discipline and pride shaped him, but he rejected the snobbery that usually accompanies royal birth.

1. Attack on the Royal Capital

   Leopold meets Asta and Noelle while the Eye of the Midnight Sun raids the capital, and the three of them take on a monstrously transformed enemy together. Impressed that a magicless commoner refuses to back down, he loudly declares Asta his rival. The arc ends in horror for him when his brother Fuegoleon is struck down and left comatose.

2. Hot Spring Training Camp

   Dragged into Mereoleona's punishing training regimen at the Yultim Volcano hot springs alongside members of several squads, Leopold is pushed past exhaustion by his sister. There he begins to grasp mana control techniques such as coating his body in mana and dominating the surrounding mana, laying the groundwork for a substantial leap in his fighting ability.

3. Royal Knights Selection Exam

   Leopold enters the tournament to prove he belongs among the kingdom's elite, fighting on a mixed team against experienced mages. His fire magic has visibly matured, but he is outclassed by stronger competitors and falls short of the title he wanted. He takes the loss as fuel rather than shame and immediately looks to the next challenge.

4. Elf Reincarnation

   When reincarnated elves seize the bodies of Magic Knights and nobles, Leopold joins the defense of the noble and royal districts, fighting beside his sister and squadmates against opponents far above his weight class. The arc also brings the return of his recovered brother, which gives him both relief and a renewed target to chase.

5. Spade Kingdom and Heart Kingdom Training

   Facing the Dark Triad's power, Leopold travels to the Heart Kingdom to train with one of its Spirit Guardians, a fire mage whose instruction lets him draw on spirit-infused flame. He then helps defend the Heart Kingdom from the invading devil-empowered forces, finally fighting as an asset rather than a liability.

Leopold worships Fuegoleon as the ideal knight and is devastated when he is gravely wounded. Fuegoleon treats him with calm encouragement rather than scorn, and his eventual return pushes Leopold to train harder than ever.

Mereoleona Vermillion

She is his most brutal instructor, throwing him into volcanic training and dangerous fights with no sympathy. Leopold fears her temper but recognizes that everything he can do in battle traces back to her merciless coaching.

Asta

Self-declared rival and friend

After watching Asta refuse to fall in the capital, Leopold publicly names him his rival despite the gulf in social rank. Their rivalry is friendly, loud and mutually motivating, and Leopold defends him against noble prejudice.

Mimosa Vermillion

Cousin

Raised in the same household, the two are close and supportive. Her healing magic repeatedly patches him up, and he is protective of her in the field despite her own growing competence as a Golden Dawn knight.
