Who is Licht?

Leader of the elves and a figure of legend, Licht believed elves and humans could live together and married Tetia, sister of the first Wizard King. The massacre of his people shattered that dream and turned him into a monster of grief, and his identity was later usurped by Patry, who led the Eye of the Midnight Sun in his name. Restored at last, he seeks not revenge but peace for his kin.

Appearance

Licht is a tall, slender elf with long pale blond hair that falls loosely past his shoulders and calm, light-colored eyes set in a serene face. Pointed ears and the faint pointed markings of elf heritage mark him as non-human, and a crystalline glow often surrounds him when his magic stirs. In flashbacks he wears simple pale ceremonial robes suited to a village leader; in the present his preserved body is dressed in the dark hooded robes associated with the Eye of the Midnight Sun. His demon form abandons all of this for a towering, horned, monstrous silhouette wreathed in dark magic.

Personality

Gentle, patient and almost unnervingly calm, Licht believed that elves and humans could live side by side and acted on that belief even when his own people doubted him. He spoke softly, valued forgiveness over retribution, and treated the humans who visited the elf village as guests rather than threats. That same depth of feeling made his fall catastrophic: grief and rage at the slaughter of his people pushed him to accept a devil's power and become something he had spent his life arguing against. When his true self is restored centuries later, he is quietly remorseful, shouldering blame for the hatred his followers inherited and pushing them toward release rather than revenge.

Background

Licht led an elf village that lived apart from the young human kingdoms, gifted with enormous magic and a rare four-leaf clover grimoire. His friendship with the light mage Lumiere, the first Wizard King, grew into a plan for lasting peace between the two peoples, and he married Lumiere's sister Tetia, who was carrying their child. On the day of their wedding, a devil working through a human vessel turned the celebration into a massacre, and the elves were killed almost to the last. Licht bound his people's souls into a reincarnation spell tied to magic stones, then took a devil's power to avenge them, transforming into a demon. Lumiere stopped him, and his grimoire gained a fifth, cursed leaf.

Role in Black Clover

  1. Eye of the Midnight Sun (Royal Capital and Witch's Forest)

The terrorist organization hunting magic stones is led by a figure calling himself Licht, who wields sword magic and a four-leaf grimoire. In truth this is Patry wearing his friend's face and imitating his magic, while Licht's real body lies preserved and dormant. The deception shapes nearly every early confrontation between the Magic Knights and the Third Eye.

  2. Seabed Temple and the magic stone hunt

As the stones are gathered, flashbacks and the elves' own words build Licht's legend as a martyr betrayed by humans. His name drives Patry, Rhya, Vetto and Fana forward, and the anti-magic sword Asta carries, the Demon-Dweller Sword, is revealed to be Licht's own creation containing part of his lingering soul.

  3. Elf Reincarnation Arc

When the reincarnation spell completes, Licht's soul returns to his preserved body and he awakens with overwhelming power, clashing with the Magic Knights and appearing to confirm every fear about the elves' vengeance. The truth that emerges instead is that the massacre was orchestrated by a devil, and that his followers' hatred was manufactured.

  4. Shadow Palace and the battle with Zagred

Facing the devil responsible for his people's destruction, Licht sides with the Magic Knights. He turns his own blades over to Asta, combining them into a single greater weapon so the anti-magic wielder can strike a being that ordinary spells cannot touch. With Zagred destroyed, he apologizes to Patry and the elves and lets their souls pass on.

Abilities and techniques

Sword Magic

Licht generates and shapes blades of pure magic, from single swords to dense barrages that blanket a battlefield. The same attribute let him forge lasting weapons rather than temporary constructs, which is why his creations survived five hundred years after his death.

Four-leaf clover grimoire

He was chosen by a rare four-leaf grimoire, a mark of extraordinary talent. After he accepted devil power it gained a blackened fifth leaf, and centuries later that same battered grimoire came to Asta, linking the two swordsmen across generations.

The demon swords

Licht crafted the Demon-Slayer, Demon-Dweller and Demon-Destroyer swords, anti-magic weapons capable of cutting spells themselves. His own consciousness lingered inside the Demon-Dweller Sword, allowing him to guide and speak to its later wielder.

Demon-Slasher Katana

During the confrontation with the devil, Licht fused his three blades into one far greater weapon and entrusted it to Asta. The combined katana carried enough anti-magic weight to sever a devil's near-invulnerable body and end the curse on his people.

Demon transformation

By accepting a devil's offer in his grief, Licht became a towering horned demon with power far beyond any mage of his era. The form traded his reason for destructive force and required the first Wizard King's full strength to contain.

Immense magic power

Even without borrowed power, Licht's reserves dwarfed those of ordinary mages, which is why the elves regarded him as their strongest and why his reanimated body could fight multiple captain-class opponents at once.

Relationships

Tetia
Wife
A human woman and Lumiere's sister, Tetia married Licht as a living symbol of the peace they hoped to build. She was pregnant when the massacre struck, and their reunion at the end of the elf conflict closes his story.
Lumiere Silvamillion Clover
Friend and brother-in-law
The first Wizard King shared Licht's dream of coexistence and was manipulated into opposing him. Lumiere was forced to seal his demonic form, and the two spent centuries as symbols of a friendship that a devil deliberately broke.
Patry
Closest friend and successor
Patry idolized Licht and took his name, face and cause after the massacre, convinced that vengeance honored him. Licht ultimately apologizes for the burden he left behind and frees Patry from the hatred that consumed him.
Asta
Inheritor
Asta wields Licht's discarded grimoire and his anti-magic blades, and Licht's fragmentary consciousness in the Demon-Dweller Sword aids him. In the decisive battle Licht arms him with a combined katana rather than fighting the devil himself.

Notable moments

  • His wedding to Tetia is turned into the slaughter of his entire village by a devil wearing a human's body.
  • He binds the souls of his people into a reincarnation spell and then accepts devil power, transforming into a demon that only the first Wizard King can stop.
  • His voice reaches Asta from inside the Demon-Dweller Sword, revealing that the anti-magic blades were his own work.
  • His soul returns to his preserved body during the elf reincarnation, unleashing his full sword magic against the Magic Knights.
  • He merges his three swords into a single greater weapon and hands it to Asta so the devil behind the massacre can be destroyed.

Trivia

  • The four-leaf grimoire Asta carries originally belonged to Licht; its blackened fifth leaf appeared only after he took devil power.
  • For much of the series the character presented as Licht is actually Patry impersonating him, including his sword magic and grimoire.
  • All three of Asta's early anti-magic swords were forged by Licht centuries before the series begins.
  • His name is German for light, a deliberate counterpart to Lumiere, whose name means the same in French.
  • His demon form is one of the earliest on-screen examples in the series of a mage bargaining with a devil for power.
