Yami Sukehiro

The foreign-born captain of the Black Bulls, Yami is a chain-smoking, foul-mouthed swordsman who collects the misfits no other squad will take. Washed ashore from the Land of the Sun as a boy, he rose through sheer nerve and mastery of dark magic. His blunt demand that his knights push past their limits shapes everyone he trains, and beneath the intimidation lies fierce protectiveness toward his squad.

Yami is a towering, thickly muscled man with tanned skin, sharp dark eyes narrowed into a permanent scowl, and black hair swept back from his forehead in loose spikes. He typically leaves his chest bare or wears only a sleeveless undershirt beneath the Black Bulls' captain's robe, paired with loose trousers and sandals, and a plain katana rides at his hip in an unadorned sheath. A cigarette usually burns between his teeth, and his posture is habitually slouched and unbothered. When he draws on his magic, a black haze rolls off his blade and darkens the air around him.

Blunt, crude and perpetually unimpressed, Yami runs his squad by shouting, shoving and daring his subordinates to push past the point where they think they will break. He collects outcasts nobody else wants and treats loyalty as something earned rather than owed, which is why the Black Bulls tolerate his abuse and adore him for it. Beneath the bullying humor is a commander who reads a battlefield instantly and puts himself between his people and anything dangerous. As a foreigner who grew up sneered at, he has no patience for noble arrogance or for anyone who uses birth as an excuse. He is easily flustered by sincere affection, especially from Charlotte Roselei, and hides it behind gruffness.

Yami was born in a distant island nation across the sea, the son of a fishing family, and was swept overboard as a boy and carried by the current to the shores of the Clover Kingdom. Unable to speak the language and marked as an outsider, he grew up brawling, stealing and being treated as a nuisance until Julius Novachrono recognized the raw magic in him and recruited him into the Grey Deer squad. Serving under Julius alongside the future Wizard King's other protégés, he refined his dark magic and the ki sensing of his homeland into a brutal, decisive fighting style. His performance eventually earned him a captaincy, and he was handed the disgraced Black Bulls to rebuild from nothing.

1. Dungeon Exploration and Early Missions

   Yami accepts Asta into the Black Bulls when no other captain will, then sets him loose on assignments that repeatedly nearly kill him. He introduces the idea of ki, drills his rookies through humiliation and threats, and steps in personally only when a mission escalates beyond what his subordinates can survive.

2. Seabed Temple Arc

   Sent to recover a magic stone, Yami directs his squad through the temple's trials and then confronts Vetto of the Third Eye when the Eye of the Midnight Sun attacks. Badly outmatched at first, he pushes his dark magic further than ever and, with Asta and Noelle, brings the elf warrior down.

3. Elf Reincarnation Arc

   With reincarnated elves possessing Magic Knights across the kingdom, Yami fights on multiple fronts, clashing with elf-controlled captains and finally with the reincarnated leader of the elves. His mastery of cutting through dimensions becomes decisive, and he defends his squad's base and the capital while Asta hunts for a way to free the possessed.

4. Spade Kingdom Invasion Arc

   When the Dark Triad's forces strike, Yami faces Zenon Zogratis, who wields devil power far beyond anything he has met. Despite a ferocious defense of his squad, he is overwhelmed and taken to the Spade Kingdom as a sacrifice for the enemy's ritual, leaving the Black Bulls to mount a rescue.

Yami saw value in a magicless boy nobody else would take, then relentlessly pushed him toward limits he had no business surviving. He teaches Asta ki, praises him only obliquely, and treats him as proof that birth and mana levels decide nothing.

Julius pulled Yami off the streets and gave a foreign outsider a place in the Magic Knights. Yami's loyalty to him is absolute and unsentimental, and the Wizard King's fall is one of the few things that visibly shakes his composure.

The Blue Rose captain is openly, painfully in love with Yami and completely unable to say so; he remains oblivious and needles her like any other rival. They nonetheless fight well together and trust each other implicitly in the field.
