Julius Novachrono

The 28th Wizard King and the Clover Kingdom's strongest mage, Julius is a cheerful eccentric who values fascinating spells and raw potential far above noble birth. His time magic lets him accelerate, slow or store magical attacks. He personally champions Asta's anti-magic, appoints captains from unlikely backgrounds, and dreams of a kingdom where talent is not bound by class, a vision tested when the Eye of the Midnight Sun strikes.

In his prime Julius is a lean, poised man of middle years with fair, loosely swept hair, light narrow eyes and an easy smile that rarely leaves his face. He wears the ceremonial regalia of the Wizard King, a heavy white and gold mantle with an ornate high collar and headdress, though he frequently abandons it for plain commoner clothes and a hood so he can wander the streets unrecognized. After his confrontation with the leader of the elves, his ravaged body is restored only to the form of a slight adolescent, keeping the same hair and the same unbothered grin in a much smaller frame.

Julius is a genuine eccentric: the most powerful mage in the kingdom, and a man who would rather abandon a state function to stare at an unusual spell. His enthusiasm for rare magic is childlike and completely sincere, and it makes him extraordinarily good at spotting talent in people the nobility writes off. Behind the whimsy is a shrewd ruler who quietly restructures the Magic Knights, promotes commoners and foreigners, and keeps dangerous secrets to himself. He believes the kingdom's future belongs to the young and invests in them accordingly. He is unfailingly gentle with subordinates, ruthless when the kingdom is threatened, and treats his own life as an acceptable cost.

Julius rose through the Magic Knights on the strength of an exceptionally rare time attribute, eventually leading the Grey Deer squad, where he gathered a crop of unusual recruits that included Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance. His habit of judging mages by potential rather than pedigree made him unpopular with the aristocracy and beloved by commoners. Named the twenty-eighth Wizard King, he used the office to open the knighthood to outsiders and to hunt personally for interesting spells across the kingdom. He also began tracking the Eye of the Midnight Sun and the theft of the magic stones long before the public knew of them, investigating in disguise and keeping much of what he learned to himself.

1. Magic Knights Entrance Exam and Dungeon Arc

   Julius observes the entrance exam and the kingdom's rising instability, delighting in every unusual spell he encounters. He takes a personal interest in Asta's anti-magic and Yuno's wind, and begins quietly maneuvering against the Eye of the Midnight Sun while indulging his habit of slipping into the city disguised as a commoner.

2. Royal Knights Selection Exam Arc

   He creates the Royal Knights specifically to strike back at the terrorist organization, designing the exam so that hidden talent and teamwork surface rather than noble reputation. He watches the matches with open glee, promotes unexpected candidates, and prepares the kingdom for the assault he knows is coming.

3. Attack on the Royal Capital

   Julius confronts the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun personally and holds his own with time magic until a devil-forged weapon pierces him. Using time he had hoarded for years, he survives long enough to entrust the kingdom's future to Asta before his body is reduced to that of a youth.

4. Elf Reincarnation and Spade Kingdom Preparations

   Presumed dead, he is revealed to have survived in a diminished form, and he re-emerges to coordinate the captains afterward. He brokers the alliance with the Heart Kingdom, sends selected knights to train there, and organizes the kingdom's defense as the Dark Triad's invasion begins.

Asta

Successor of his hopes

Julius is fascinated by anti-magic from their first meeting and encourages the boy's ambition to become Wizard King rather than mocking it. At his lowest moment he entrusts the kingdom's future to Asta directly, treating it as a genuine handover.

Yami Sukehiro

Former subordinate and friend

Julius found Yami as an unwanted foreign delinquent and made him a Magic Knight, later backing his promotion to captain. Their bond is casual and deep, and Yami's respect for him is one of the few things he never jokes about.

William Vangeance

Julius recruited the masked mage and gave him a squad, unaware of the second will sharing his body. The betrayal that follows is a personal wound as much as a political one, yet Julius never repudiates him.

Marx Francois

Marx handles the paperwork, scheduling and memory-related duties that Julius habitually abandons in favor of chasing interesting magic. Their dynamic is comic but functional, with Marx serving as the office's actual administrator.
